Thanks for stopping by our forum. So that everyone on the forum can get a chance to assist you properly, please let us know, what shooting mode is the PowerShot A4000 IS currently set to?

Also, if you change the shooting mode (ex. Auto or P mode), are you able to press the Flash button, and does the Flash option show as Active on your LCD?

The mode is set to Auto; the flast icon shows on the screen. When I press the button to take the picture it takes I must hold the button down for a long before it takes a picture but the flash does not go off. Very frustrating. Thanks

Hi Donna14,

To test the flash, I recommend trying the "Flash On" mode, as shown below:

Depending on the [Shooting Mode], there are cases where the [Flash] cannot be set to [On].
The following explanations are provided based on the assumption that the [Shooting Mode] is set to [Program AE] ().
The position and shape of the operation buttons, images displayed, and setting items may differ depending on the model you are using.

1. Press the Power button on the camera.

2. Press the Flash () button or the right directional button ([Flash]).

3. The following screen will appear in the LCD screen.

Operate the directional buttons to select the [Flash On] ().

Make sure to select [On].

4. If the following icon is displayed on the monitor*, this completes the setting process.

* The icon display location differs depending on the model being used.

If the flash fails to fire, unfortunately, your camera will require service. You may set up service for your camera by clicking here.

I mailed the camera back to cannon to be repaired; none of these suggestions worked and it is still under warranty. Thank you
