No Vignetting Fix for Powershot V1 in CR3/Raw?

I just got a Powershot V1. I am shooting in CR3/JPG mode. The JPG's look fine, but when I open a CR3 for editing, the vignetting is horrible. The corners are completely black.

I tried using Elements 2024 and free Affinity to fix this. Elements will not even open the file. It tells me to download and install a Camera Raw plugin, but after I do that, Elements still refuses to open the files and tells me to install the plugin. In Affinity, there is no lens profile for this camera, and it is not even close to possible to fix the vignetting using the manual tools.

AI claims Canon has not provided Adobe with the data to allow my CR3's to open in Elements 2024, and it says Affinity relies on a site called Lensfun for lens profiles. The Powershot V1 is not supported at Lensfun, and virtually all of the Powershots are unsupported for vignetting.

I have been told to download a program to convert my files to something my software will edit. This is obviously not acceptable except as a temporary fix.

Please don't tell me to accept JPG's or to rely on the converter. I insist on raw files, period, and I am not going to keep using a converter forever.

What is Canon doing about this? Should I return the camera?

If you want to use Affinity with a lens profile you will need take the raw samples needed for Lensfun and contribute.

Canon DPP4 supports the V1.

If you need more editing than DPP4 can accomplish you can export a TIFF to any other software you want. See last option on the following screenshot.

Canon invested time and money to develop a new RAW format that is compatible with very frame rates. Why would they want to just give away their investment in their intellectual property?

After installing the updates and patches, did you reboot your computer?

There are many dozens, if not over hundred, of photo editing software products out there. I don't think it's reasonable to expect Canon to spend the resources to make its products compatible with all of them.

Affinity and Elements are not exactly obscure, and as to why Canon should be more helpful, one reason is to encourage me to buy more Canon products, which I will not be doing after this. I may return this one. This is like the stupid mistake Apple made that catapulted the PC to global dominance.

A simple search (not using AI) shows that Adobe Camera RAW does support the Powershot V1.

Sounds like you may have an Adobe issue or user issue. The current version of Elements is 2026.

We provide tools that enable users to work with our products. If users choose to use different tools, they are responsible for verifying compatibility. We cannot (and will not) troubleshoot or otherwise support any non-Canon or third-party software or tools unless they are specifically listed on the product's support page.

If you need help using non-Canon software, you must contact the software developer - they are the experts on the software they created, not Canon. They may need to update their software to include the latest RAW codecs; this is their responsibility, not ours. We cannot force a third party to update its software.

I understand that already, so I have made a decision to strive to avoid Canon products in the future. I'm amazed that you're giving a customer who has bought your printers and cameras this rude, high-handed lecture. You're really doubling down on bad policy.

I don’t need Canon. No one does. Canon needs me and other customers. Something for you to think about.

DPP is a great software. It's easier to use and learn than you might think, and it supports all of the camera/lens profiles needed to make your images look their best. Give it a try. I bet you'll be really surprised.

Hi Rick. I don’t think the OP understands the concept of annual release perpetual license software. The current version of Elements is 2026, which means version 2024 was released in Fall of 2023. It is not going to support any devices released in 2024 or later.

The question is justified. Why doesn’t Canon share how the lens correction data in the metadata should be interpreted? Why do others like Capture One, Adobe, DxO, and Lensfun have to reinvent the wheel?
