I don’t want to change aperture or any exposure settings during the capture of the three images the camera will combine into one with HDR, but I do want to be able to use aperture or shutter priority to set the exposure values I want for the image. When the G1 X is set it to HDR, the camera appears to choose exposure settings as if it in program mode rather than aperture or shutter priority. I have yet to find a way to force it to use, for instance, f/8 when in HDR mode.

In-camera HDR is still relatively new to me and I am starting to realize that in HDR mode, you have to let the G1 X Mk II choose the exposure settings. Is that the case?

https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART115874

Why would you want to vary Av during a HDR capture? Shouldn’t you want to alter Tv or ISO, to change the brightness, instead of altering the focus.

The camera does control the HDR exposure. But it does it based on your initial exposure settings and the settings you provide directing it how to execute the HDR capture.

For example, you set an exposure. You have previously set the camera to capture (3) exposures; 0 Ev, -1 Ev, and +1 Ev.

Back to why you want to alter the aperture settings, Av. What are you photographing?

Are you trying to capture a high dynamic range image? Are you trying to capture focus stack of images, for macro photography?

I spoke with Richard, an extremely helpful and efficient support guy on the PowerShot support team at the number above, and he confirmed that no PowerShot model allows the photographer to choose exposure values or even ISO values when in HDR mode. The only option is to let the camera choose all values. Fortunately, that is almost always really good.

Still, I can't imagine that would not be a popular option for a higher end small camera like the G1X. The dual control rings and all that space available on the rear display seem purpose built to allow for aperture or shutter speed adjustment no matter what mode the user has chosen.

Same with ISO. I get why auto ISO is popular, but there is a limit and the tripod is not dead yet. Why not let the photographer choose the ISO setting in HDR mode just like in other modes? The G1 X Mk II is not that small.

“ I don’t want to change aperture or any exposure settings during the capture of the three images the camera will combine into one with HDR, but I do want to be able to use aperture or shutter priority to set the exposure values I want for the image.
Your description of how HDR works is incorrect. As I explained above, the whole point of HDR is to capture the same shot at different exposures and then combine them into a single image.

If you want to use f/8, then set the shooting mode to Av, aperture priority.

Thanks, Wad; I understand how HDR works. Surely you can understand that I want the three images at f/8 with shutter times of, for instance, 1/125, 1/500, and 1/2000? Does that make sense? A scene may call for f/2 or f/16, or even shutter priority at 1/4000. I want to choose the aperture, but in HDR mode, the G1 X only allows Program "priority" where the camera chooses all exposure settings, including ISO. While my 80D can, apparently no PowerShot can do that.

Just an update. Turns out the G1X MkII can not do in camera HDR an aperture priority. The camera sets the aperture and shutter speed. No other options. Gonna have to make it work.
