topic NO FLASH! Canon PowerShot S5IS in Point & Shoot Digital Cameras

Hello from a new Canon camera owner ( actually more than one!). I recently purchased a used Canon S5 IS for my wife and I cannot get the built in flash to work. Admittedly as an old guy of 74, the owners manual is daunting but if anyone can help a bored old guy stuck in a wheelchair (I hope temporarily) I would must definitely appreciate ANY possible answers, suggestions, etc.

THANK YOU!!
