I transferred a few video clips from the camera to the PC. Two of them seemed to transfer ok but would not play on the PC? The file size is showing as 0kb on the PC. Is the file size too large?? Its around 1gb.

How did you transfer them? Via the camera's USB connection or with a card reader? Using Canon's software or something else?

Explorer in XP has, IIRC (and it's bitten me a few times, so I think I do), problems dealing with large files. I resorted to using Teracopy for moving even 5D RAW files around and they were nowhere near 1 GB. You might try using ZB to move the files and see if it does beter.
