I have a Powershot G10. I've been using a 32 gb sd card in it. I tried to format a 64gb and a 128 gb card to use in it. However, I get a memory card error. Will the G10 not support a card bigger than 32 gb? Both cards have been formatted for use with a different camera. I get the error message as soon as I turn the camera on with the larger cards in it.

The manual for the camera states SDHC cards. The maximum size for an SDHC card is 32GB. The camera is not compatible with SDXC cards.

Hey Hank, this is a bit of a late response, but I've tested with my PowerShot G10, and it does appear to function with SDXC cards (which come in sizes larger than 32 GB). They just need to be formatted in FAT32 before being inserted into the camera. Though officially unsupported (per John's previous advice), it's relatively common for older SDHC SD card readers to read newer SDXC SD cards, if they're formatted in FAT32 (as opposed to the ExFAT they ship with).

According to my testing, the camera will not be able to format (or reformat) them itself, but appears to read and write photos, videos, and other data just fine. Given that FAT32 supports a maximum partition size of 2 TB, one could feasibly have a functional 2 TB SD card in a PowerShot G10. Unfortunately for videographers, the file size limit of FAT32 remains at 4 GB, so you won't be able to record any videos larger than that.

Using SD cards larger than 32 GB has the humorous effect of rendering useless the counter that shows how many pictures you have space to take, as it will be maxed out at 9999 until you have less than ~40 GB free (based on an average photo size of 4 MB).

1. The SD card should always be formatted in-camera. So after formatting it to FAT32 on a computer, format it in the camera. It may not work reliably without doing it.

2. The 9999 of the shots-remaining counter is not the "fault" of the SD card. Cameras don't display higher than 9999, so the number doesn't start to drop until you have taken enough pictures to get below 9999 left, which may not ever happen if you use very large cards. And it is foolish to use cards that big. You should not keep that much on one memory card, for safety. Do not store on the SD card. Copy files to a computer and format the card in-camera. Better to have multiple cards, to switch when you have as much as you'd be prepared to lose should a card or camera malfunction and erase it.
