PowerShot SX50 HS Movies in Av or Tv Mode Rather Than in Movie Mode

Is there any difference shooting movies in say AV or TV mode rather than in the movie mode? If shooting movies in AV will it be able to use the AV settings for example like 1.4x extender in preference to the digital zoom?

Hi Johninireland!

With regards to the Digital Tele-Converter on the PowerShot SX50 HS, it can be enabled while in Tv or Av mode when shooting video. This increases the focal length of the lens by approximately 1.5x or 2x. Video can be shot in this mode with the Tele-Converter enabled to either of those settings. This works differently than the digital zoom where, in Movie mode, you can switch between Standard or Off. There is no bar on the zoom to let you know where the optical zoom stops and the digital zoom starts with the Digital Tele-Converter in the Av or Tv modes.

Thank you for that. It makes me wonder why there is movie mode on the selection dial when it can be accessed in AV and TV with what sounds like a better focal length increment quality. I will certainly use AV and TV for shooting video. Is there a reason for the movie mode on the dial. Are there any situations where the movie mode on the dial would be more of an advantage than using AV or TV? Thank you for your time.

Hello Again, Johninireland,

You are certainly welcome for the assistance. We are glad we could help you with that issue. There is a video mode on the PowerShot SX50 IS because you have full control over the video functions such as Super Slow Motion Video recording and iFrame Movie. When shooting in Av and Tv mode, you do not have these extended options. This is the reason for the dedicated mode dial for Video Recording.

Av and Tv Modes are great for shooting stills, as you have extended control over the aperture and shutter speed respectively.

We hope this answers your questions and that you have a great day!

Hello Again, Johninireland,

You can certainly shoot video whilst in the Sports Mode, but it defaults back to the presets of the Movie Mode. So, you would not be able to shoot with a higher FPS with regards to movies. That mode is designed to capture stills of fast moving subjects.

I hope this helps and that you have a great day!

Please let us know if we can assist you further, or if you need to get in touch with technical support.
