macOS Big Sur 11.2.3 not recognising Powershot G12 USB

I have inherited my late Father's G12. When connecting to my MacBook it does not get recognised. Please help.

Does the MacBook have a built-in SD card reader? If not, it may be far cheaper (time and energy) to pick up a dedicated USB card reader. Apple has some as well as other vendors. Just be sure to get an appropriate version for your cards and computer (check actual USB connector you'll need).
