My camera gives a “lens error. Restart the camera” . I don’t know how to do that. I considered a new camera but Cannon no longer makes one with a view finder as well as a screen. Does anyone know how to restart the camera?

Restart means to just turn the camera off and then on again. If that does not work then you may have dirt in the lens assembly or something like that. Use a vacuum to try and draw any debris out of the lens assembly. One other possibility is the lens assembly inside is broken which will require service or a better option would be to replace it. Repairs on these are expensive. Canon has many models with a viewfinder and LCD.

Thank you I'll try the Vacuum. Cannon does not make a compact camera that can be put in your pocket or purse now. Since the sun washes out the screen, I like the view finder.
