SX610HS does not find Mac computer or Dell printer over wifi

I managed to connect the camera to my iPhone 4 running the Camera Connect app and that works fine either with the SX610's own wifi or using my home wifi network.

But when I try add another device following Canon's instructions – either my Macbook Pro or Dell Laserprinter, which are both connected to the same wifi network — the camera goes lookng and never finds them.

The Mac OS is 10.11.6 El Capitan, Dell printer model C1765nfw.

I see from some previous threads that other Mac users get further than this: their cameras find the computer then they get stuck at a later stage. Is it simply that El Capitan is not supported by this camera in any way?
