Hi! I'm a 16 year old beginner photographer 🙂 I've been taking photos for over a year now and have been loving it so much. I shoot on a canon EOS Rebel t7, I've been told it's not that good of a camera but I think my photos give me the confidence on how it is a good camera.

At the moment im leaning more towards sports photography, but I really just like to take pictures of anything I see. I'd like to get any kind of tips for future pictures! 🙂

Welcome, excellent photos. It’s good to see someone who has found the joy of photography! I’m glad you have ignored the camera snobs. You may not have the most featured or expensive camera, but it is quite capable in right hands, your hands. The camera is a tool and your mind and vision use that to make pictures, and you are obviously talented and in sync with your camera. Some day you may have more expensive cameras, but remember, best camera is the one in your hands.

Don't kid yourself about the T7. I have had mine for about eight years. I find it is much more capable of quality photos than me. Have you downloaded the manual? Great resource. Just think about the photos of many early photographers and a new one for me, George Masa. George Masa was a photographer whose stunning photos of the Smoky Mountains were instrumental in the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; book is George Masa: A Life Reimagined by Janet McCue and Paul Bonesteel.

Hi,

First I would like to applaud your interest in photography. The photos you took here show your development as a photographer. Regarding the Canon T7, it is a fine camera. All cameras are essentially a box that captures light. Of even more importance is the quality of lenses. Canon has two (2) lines of camera lenses. The standard RF line and the RF "L" line. The "L" line are of very high quality and are professional. They are expensive but as your photography grows, it would be worth considering. The standard RF lenses are of high quality also, however most are not weather sealed.

If your interest is in sports, I might suggest that you look into a telephoto or telephoto-zoom lens, which increases the magnification are are well suited to sports photography.

I'll look into the manual. If I'm being honest, I really just watch videos and mess with the settings, but I'll look into it. Thank you! :))

Hi Daniella, I started photo when I was 13 and started out with an EOS Rebel XSi. Which was my mom’s camera. Then I moved to the EOS 40D then to the EOS 5D Mark IV. Skills are more important than owning an expensive camera that you don’t know how to use. I’m 24 now and I love macro photography and I’m a flash expert when it comes to Canon’s E-TTL II flash system. You’ll learn more from the experts here than AI can. We see people come to the forum that bought expensive gear. But don’t know how to use it or it was recommended to them by AI. If you have any questions about gear you can ask them here. Don’t just go out on a whim purchasing gear that you don’t know much about. Always get out and shoot and learn how to use your camera. You’ll find what you like to take pictures of. It took me awhile to figure it out. I’ll tell you it wasn’t easy for me to start out in the beginning but don’t give up if you can’t get it right the first time.

Hi Daniella,

In my earlier comment to you I said that you could use RF series lenses on your T7. I was incorrect. The Canon DSLR series cameras like yours can only use EF designated lenses. Sorry for the error.

Thank you for sharing some of your images! I absolutely love your story and the reason you are here in the community. Seems you are getting some great advice from some of our members. If I may encourage you to keep looking at the world around you and capture what you find meaningful. The images that you shared demonstrate that you understand composition, light and detail.

I really love the image of the reflection of the motorcycle rider in the rear view. It's a fleeting moment that you were there and made the decision to snap the shutter. Nice job!

The many years ago that I started learning photography one of my instructors suggested that I find photographers that I like and study their work to get inspired. I think you may appreciate the work of Henri-Cartier-Bresson.

Remember that it is the photographer that makes the photograph NOT the camera. Those who are saying it's not a good camera are wrong. I'm a working photographer with over 45 years of experience and one of my cameras is a Canon R100 that more than a few sneered at for being "too basic". And they are completely wrong. Because I know what I am doing no one would be able to tell if I shot a picture on my R100 or a top-of-the-line R1.

My advice as someone who has taught/teaches photography is to continue shooting and develop your understanding of composition first and exposure second. Good composition forgives exposure being slightly off, but perfect exposure cannot overcome inept composition.

Your first, second, and fourth shots in this set are really good. You have good instinct, so continue shooting pictures and be mindful of what you are trying to accomplish compositionally.

THEN when you really know your craft, you can look into getting a camera that has more features because you will be ready.
