Sumatran Tiger Facts. They ate an Apex predator with no natural enemies other than humans. Poaching is one of their main threats. Sumatran tigers are formidable predators, at the top of the food chain. They can take down an animal as big as a gaur (the largest species of wild cattle), tapir or baby elephant and will eat smaller prey such as monkeys, birds and fish. Sumatran tigers are excellent swimmers and have partially web toes to help them. Sumatran tigers have the thinnest lines of all tigers an adaptation that provides better camouflage in deep tropical forest. Like Zebras, Sumatran tigers can be told apart by their stripe pattern. They have a more bearded and maned appearance then other subspecies, and they are the smallest and rarest in the world. Males are typically 220 to 300 lbs. and about 7.25 to 7.4 ft in length. Females get to about 170 to 240 lbs. and are 7 to 7.6 ft in length. They are the smallest subspecies because they live in the island of Sumatra. Some organizations that are helping to keep the Sumatran Tigers from becoming extinct are: Sumatran Wildlife Sanctuary, The Sumatran Tiger Trust, and Saving Tigers from Extinction.
