What a difference, or not, 70 years makes

When my grand uncle died many years ago, he left me a treasure trove of carefully organized Kodachrome and Ektachrome slides that he shot between about 1939 and 1985. During the last eight years or so, I have been making hi-res scans of his slides. One of my joys has been trying to re-create some of the images he captured.

This first image, taken by me in May of 2018, re-creates the second image, captured on Kodachrome by my grand uncle 70 years earlier in May of 1948. It’s interesting to note what has, and hasn’t, changed in 70 years.

The Kodachrome slide was scanned with a CanoScan 9000F Mark II. Post-processed in Exposure X7. Sadly, I have no idea what kind of camera was used to capture this image.

This scene is located in the community of Butte des Morts, within the Township of Winneconne in Winnebago County, Wisconsin USA.

Post-Script: A few months after I took the photo in May of 2018, the monument was relocated to a new site, approximately 300 feet directly east. It’s probably for the best; the original location was within the parking lot of a restaurant. The new location is in a park.
