Squirrel and software tool discussion

Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on May 11, 2026

Some of the camera settings I used to make this photo are at:

https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2026May31_birds_and_cats/IMG_5904c_2026may11_squirrel.html

Software tools that I used include Canon DPP on iMac, exiftool free software on both iMac and Debian Linux, GraphicsMagick and jpegli on Debian. I saved a 16 bit TIFF from DPP so that I would have more color information to work with. I used graphicsmagick to reduce the image size for viewing on screens and to add the frame and caption. I sometimes use rawtherapee free software, but Canon DPP has the advantages of better understanding the camera settings I used, availability of "digital lens optimizer", and DPRAW processing tool. DPP could be improved by using jpegli when saving JPG files. GraphicsMagick offers a choice of several algorithms for resizing an image. I use the WayBackMachine to make an archive copy of the web pages I write so that they might still exist when my web server is gone. https://web.archive.org/web/20260601110441/https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2026May31_birds_and_cats/IMG_5904c_2026may11_squirrel.html

Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger) in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on May 11, 2026

There is also a video made from the still photo zooming in to the eye of the squirrel.

This has sometimes been called the "Ken Burns effect", although he was not the first to use it.

I might not understand what you are asking for, straight out of camera compared to final edited photo?

Image saved by DPP compared to one created by jpegli?

Straight out of camera compared to image saved by DPP?

I linked to some such comparisons in a previous post and the details are at:

https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2026Apr30_birds_and_cats/IMG_5771c_2026apr03_titmouse.html where I have links to SOOC image, DPP JPG, and jpegli JPG and a JPG showing the result of subtracting one image from the other (the difference).

What was new in this post is the video with the "Ken Burns effect" and the ffmpeg command line used to make it.

There is a video made from the still photo zooming in to the eye of the squirrel. https://www.rsok.com/~jrm/2026May31_birds_and_cats/video_IMG_5904c2.mp4.
