Pretty horse.

From what I can gather, a Paint is a breed, and a Pinto refers to the coloring.

According to Horse Illustrated,

"The short answer between the differences of a Paint Horse vs. a pinto is that Paint is a breed based on bloodlines, and pinto is a coat color pattern that can be found in horses of many different breeds. The longer answer is a bit more complicated."

"Paint Horses can only have the bloodlines of Quarter Horses, Paint Horses or Thoroughbreds in their pedigrees."

From The Vet Desk:

"All Paint Horses Are Pintos But Not All Pintos Are Paints."

It's definitely not an Appaloosa.

Great job, Steve! You did some research. You're correct Pintos are not a breed but a coloring that can be found in many different breeds The earliest known pinto horses appeared shortly after horses were domesticated. Analysis of ancient horse DNA found a tobiano horse that lived about 5600 years ago, and a sabino-1 horse that lived about 5000 years ago. Tobiano was at first favored by humans and became especially common during the Iron Age (900 BC to 400 AD), before becoming less frequent again in the Middle Ages. Good catch!

Appaloosa horse has a mottled coloration on the hindquarters. Coloration is very unique to the breed. A close friend is a farrier and knows all kinds of facts about horses.
