Hello, my MF656cdw printer is great. However, the printer is currently flashing an error (orange light) and stuck on the paper menu. I can't get it to go to the main menu as none of the buttons are working. I can manipulate through the printer screen to change paper types, but have no way to get to the main menu.

I read that a firmware update might be needed, but I'm not sure how to do that if I can't get to the main menu.

Thank you,

Greetings,

The first thing you need to do is get the printer out of its error state. If there are any pending print jobs try canceling those from the device from which they were initiated.

Have you checked the machine for paper jams? Remove the lower drawer. Check the paper pick up feeder in the bottom of the device. Open the duplexer in the back. Check the ADF, etc. Power the machine off gracefully, turn it back on. What are the results?

Upgrading firmware will do nothing to resolve this issue. Updating firmware should never be performed on a printer, camera, computer or anything that is in an error state or is malfunctioning. It's unlikely you would be able to initiate an update anyway. For printers, firmware updates typically address security issues and in rare instances add functionality. Typically, however, you could use the machine for its entire life without updating its firmware and not have any issues.

Rick,

Thank you for the quick response. I restarted the printer and the error light is resolved. I was able to print a document this morning. However, the menu button is still not working and still stuck on the paper size screen. The touch screen works. I am able to navigate the paper selection screen and change the paper type. However, I can't get to the main menu.

The menu button does not work in any way. It does not beep or make any action when pressed.

When I power cycle the printer the main menu comes up for a fraction of a second and then immediately goes to the paper size menu.

Thanks for your help,

Mike

Thanks,

Mike
