I mistakenly tried a third-party toner cartridge for my MF628cw. They worked, but an error code showed up. After about six printings, I reinstalled the older cartridges in the printer, but the error didn't go away. If I buy new Canon cartridges, will the code go away?

Just had to replace a cartridge for the 1st time in my MF455dw and the print is locked, as it is not an original Canon cartridge. Is this typical? I've found numerous compatible cartridges on line for about half the price of the Canon original. If Canon locks the print due to "counterfeit cartridge", which is the error message I get, why are there compatible cartridges even being sold? Is there a workaround?

Hello Tommyd1,

Our Canon genuine toner cartridges have chips on them that help the printer detect that the correct type of toner cartridge is loaded. The chip lets the printer perform maintenance options and image correction as well. Some third-party toner cartridges are properly detected but can cause print quality issues or prevent you from performing certain maintenance options.

Using third party toner cartridges is not something we recommend since we do not have the specifications for the cartridges and can't guarantee their performance.

Still seems suspect to simply lock the machine. Good reason to buy a different brand. Canon cartridge $145. Other cartridges $60~

Greetings,

Canon does not block, lock or keep you from using your printer if you use 3rd party inks or toners.

However, some inks and toners are not manufactured to the same (high) standards as Canon brand inks / toners. This is why Canon recommends OEM products. The others might / can work until they don't. You may buy a brand for years that suddenly stops working, gives inconsistent colors or results. In some cases, they don't detect or work properly at all. "Hit or miss"

The printer has Canon Genuine Mode enabled by default. This is designed to protect you from using counterfeit or non genuine products. It checks the toner or ink and if it detects 3rd party products it notifies you. Genuine Mode can be disabled:

This will only turn off the warning for non-genuine inks / toners. It will not make cheaply made products (consumables) "work" with your device.

Hope this helps. 😉

You are correct. If you do not want to pay the price for Canon OEM cartridges for a Canon printer you basically have two choices: you can either not buy a Canon printer, or use third-party cartridges and be on your own -- no one here (or at Canon support) will be able to troubleshoot or help you with the consequences of using a third-party cartridge.
