imageCLASS MF654Cdw in sleep does not automatically wake up when a job is sent to print

I just bought an imageCLASS MF654Cdw printer and have connected it to my network. When I send a job to print from my computer, it does not automatically wake up and print if it is in sleep mode. Instead, I have to go to the printer and manually wake it up, which is a pain. How can I get it to wake up when I send a job to print automatically?

Please make sure you've installed the Canon software on your computer. First, go to our site here: https://canon.us/MF654Cdwsoftware

On that page, you'll need to verify/select your Operating System from the dropdown on the right, then tap the "Download" button to the right of the option that says "Master Setup." I've included a screenshot using Windows 11 as an example:

Since you already have the Canon software installed on your computer, I recommend contacting support for one-on-one troubleshooting so they can help determine why your printer isn't waking up as it should. Support is available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ET) at 800-OK-CANON (800-652-2666).

You do not say what operating system you are using, but try deleting the printer driver and reconnect it using the printer's IP address instead of allowing the driver setup to locate the printer on its own.

Edit: If that works, then set the printer's IP to "Static" in your router and in the printer's web Remote UI.

Same problem. If I touch the control panel on the printer, it wakes up and prints fine. But it will not wake up when my Mac sends it a document when it is asleep.

I set it to a static address and that seems to have fixed my 654C. It's still a problem with the 750C.

STEP 1 — Set a Static IP on the printer (10 mins, safest fix)

On the printer touchscreen:

Menu
Preferences
Network
TCP/IP Settings
IPv4 Settings
IP Address Settings
Tap Check Settings
→ note the current:
- IP Address
- Subnet Mask
- Gateway
Go back and set:
- Auto Acquire → Off
- Manually Acquire
Enter (example — yours may differ):
- IP Address: 192.168.1.200
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Apply / OK
Restart the printer

These steps are straight from Canon’s MF654/MF660 network manual

✅ At this point, the printer will always live at the same IP.

STEP 2 — Add a Standard TCP/IP Port in Windows

Back on your laptop:

Printer Properties (where you already are)
Ports tab
Click Add Port…
Select Standard TCP/IP Port
Click New Port…
When asked:
- Hostname or IP: enter the static IP you set (e.g. 192.168.1.200)
- Device type: TCP/IP Device
Finish the wizard

Canon explicitly documents this as required when switching away from MFNP

STEP 3 — Switch the printer to the new port

Still on Ports tab:

✅ Tick the new TCP/IP port (it will show the IP)
❌ Untick CNMFNP – Canon MFNP Port
Click Apply → OK

⚠️ Important:

Only one port should be ticked
That port should show an IP address, not MFNP

STEP 4 — (Optional but recommended) Disable bidirectional support

In the same window:

Untick Enable bidirectional support
Click Apply

This reduces sleep‑related status polling issues (common Canon workaround).

✅ What should change after this

You should see:

Printer wakes from sleep when a job is sent
No need to touch the panel
No more “offline” after idle
Much faster first‑page response

This exact combination (static IP + TCP/IP port) is the only consistently successful fix reported by MF654/MF660 users

Sanity check (30 seconds)

After finishing:

Put printer to sleep
Wait 2–3 minutes
Print a test page

If it wakes and prints → ✅ fixed.

As I mentioned in my original post, both printers are being accessed by Macs, not Windows.

In my second post I noted that both already have static addresses which seemed to help the 654C, but not the 750C.

The information provided by @Mackumz23 is definitely helpful.

I'd like to add the following.

Assigning a static IP address to an endpoint (like a printer ) is beneficial. However, address reservation or assignment should be done on your router. It is the single source of truth on your network.

When done, you don't need to make any changes to the endpoint since that device will receive the statically assigned IP address regardless of when it was last used, turned off, turned on, gone to sleep, etc.

Installing the printer as a TCP/IP device applies to Windows and MAC.

To do this on the MAC, open the printers and scanners applet, select the printer and press the minus key (-) to remove it.

Now click the globe icon which is just to the right of the default add printer icon at the top of the applet.

In the first field, enter the IP address you reserved or assigned to the device on your router. The printer name two fields below will also populate with this IP address. This field is editable. Give your printer a friendly name. Something meaningful to you.

The Use: field below has a drop down that will allow you to select the Canon driver you installed previously. Change to this and press ok. The printer will be added as a TCP/IP device.

Happy to help you further investigate/ troubleshoot the issue you're having with your 750c series device. If that device has internet connectivity, I suggest you check for a firmware upgrade. This can be done from the printer's LCD by scrolling to the right. There's an icon called update firmware. I can provide more detail if you tell us the actual model of your 750 series device.

I did not find any setting in my router for assigning static addresses, other than for the router itself. I did remove and re-add both printers at IP devices with their endpoint static addresses and that seems to be working. We'll see how it goes this week.
