My printer started making a loud rubbing noise as it prints. A frequency of about 2 beats a second.

It started after I replaced the black toner cartridge, although I didn't think about it at the time.

I have checked for any paper or other obstructions inside, from the front and the back. The black cartridge doesn't seem to lay in the toner tray flat like the others. Toner tray only latches on the right side, but that may be the design.

The noise started at about the 3.5 year mark.

Question 1: Is this Canon or a third party toner cartridge?

Greetings ,

Based on your description, it doesn't sound like you have the toner cartridge seated correctly in the toner carrier/drawer. When properly inserted all cartridges, sit evenly and without protrusion. Try re-seating the cartridge until it fits the same as the others.

The black toner sits in the tray as well as it can. There is no other way for it to fit. I think the tray interface for the black is just different than the other toners. It just feels a little loose and maybe sits slightly higher.

I have noticed the toner tray only latches on the right side. Is that how it is supposed to work?

The noise seems to be coming from the front of the printer, and not the back. How can I tell if I have a defective toner, short of buying a new one and discovering it isn't the black toner cartridge after all?

I have an audio recording I made of the rubbing sound, but I am not sure how to upload a M4A file format.
