You can also download the update file from your printer's Canon support page, and follow those instructions for installation. When I first got my MF656CDW, the printer itself said that 5.03 was the least firmware version, but I was able to install 5.04 from the Canon web site.

Hello. I'm a new owner of an all-in-one laser printer/scanner (model listed in subject). I'm getting a notification that there is a firmware update but when attempting to download it, it doesn't seem to be progressing (unless I'm not giving it enough time). I let it go for roughly nearly 5 minutes but I ended up cancelling as I have a good network and I wouldn't think it's that big of a download. Any suggestions? Is there a more effective way of updating firmware? The doesn't appear to be any firmware updating tool for macOS 15, of which I am running.

Greetings,

I update the firmware on both of my MFPs from time to time. I use a static IP address and connected wirelessly. I use the firmware update option on the printer's LCDs. It usually takes under 5 minutes start to finish including the reboot.

Try changing the DNS setting on your router. You can use Google 8.8.8.8 or cloudflare. 1.1.1.1.

After making the change, restart the printer and perform the firmware update again. Let me know if this helps. You can change it back easily after testing.
