Do I need a land line to send a fax on this printer?

Faxes can be sent / received 2 ways with the 656. You can use a standard phone line or you can use what Canon calls iFAX. See this for information about both:

Thank you for reply. When I press the Fax button it sends me to the destination input number. I don't see the i-fax option.
