Just to level set, my printer comes with 2 trays - the top one is the multi-purpose tray which looks like a slot in the front of the pronter where one feeds papers of different sizes I suppose. The bottom one is a paper cassette called "A4/Plain 2".

My printer keeps selecting the multi-purpose tray as the default for print jobs. This requires that I feed in paper manually - not cool. I would like to change this to the tray #1 ( lower tray) but cant figure out how.

For default preferences, I have selected - auto tray selection by the printer but this does not seem to work. I cant figure out how else to set this up. I've spent quite a bit of time on the home screen -> paper settings option

Any ideas will be much appreciated. Till then I'll continue research this ....

Thanks

Hi

Thx for the response. I found that one has to choose LTR as source as opposed to A4 which is what I was choosing. Once I did that, it is correctly using the bottom tray.

Thanks

-gh

I have the same issue. None of the above works.

Up till now this printer is the worst, touchscreen is working very bad as well and it always selects the MP tray and asks to confrim it's loaded with A4.

If it doesn't work like it should, I'll advise my company to stop using these.

Hi

These are the steps I took

- Hit Home on console

- Select "Paper Settings"

- Select "LTR/Plain 2"

That was it!

I hope this works for you. I would reach out to customer service to figure this out.

All the best.

To Canon Tech Support,

Clearly the selection of the lower tray as default (on MF644cdw) is not functioning well as evidenced by the few posts on this thread. Why can't you guys debug this issue and help people out rather than point to documentation which doesn't appear to be very helpful. Eventually , I think Canon should issue a patch to make this straight-forward. It is clearly a dissatifier for the product.

Thanks

-gh

OH - I forgot to mention that in your Printer preferences (Windows 10) , for the "Paper Source" preference , ensure that "Automatically Select" is chosen. This will ensure that the printer default is used.

This is what worked for me.

Had exactly the same problem like the rest of the people here, tried all those settings to disable multifunctional tray and none worked.

I believe that if you set both trays to work on LTR (lettersize) paper by default it is going to pick the first one on the list and that is Multi one.

So I changed settings for the Multipurpose one to LGL (legal) and now when I print letter size docs it goes straight to the main tray w/o complains. At least for now it works.

To change settings:

1. Move the physical limiters on Multi tray to LGL marks (not sure does this matter but did it anyways)

2. Go Home/Paper Settings/pick the top one with red icon - that's M tray and on the list select LGL paper

3. If didn't already repeat #2 for main tray and this time pick LTR size

4. Go back to Home screen and drill again to paper settings to see did it save as you selected.

It should be fine afer this.

Good luck.

PS

Actually there are tonnes of settings in the Remote console - Web page for your printer, much easier to navigate than that onboard screen. The screenshot below shows my settings:

It is still pissing me off that I can't change settings for auto timeout. I'd like to leave it on forever. No matter what I set it always go to sleep after 15 sec.

Even worst is that on my iMac the printer keeps getting lost, iMac and printer can't find each other if I didn't print for 2 or more days. Have to remove it and re-added on weekly basis. Really disappointed in this printer, thought Cannon is a quality name. Ah well we all learn on mistakes...major joke, when purchasing was looking for the one that can do 2 sides...and joke is on me. It prints 2 sides but doesn't scan 2 sides. Sigh.

Very disappointed, indeed. Why on Earth woud a company in business this long have a default tray other than the one you dont have to feed manually feed. Are you kidding me? Having to spend even 1 minute on this issue is absurd. I will try and then I am immediately returning this product and will forever eliminate Canon from future purchases.

I just installed this printer. The first test print went fine from my Windows 10 PC, it automatically used the paper tray.

Then I fed one sheet of paper thru the manual feed, (a horrible design by itself but that is not the point here!) printed fine.

Now my printer defaults to the manual feed and of course, there was no paper.

I have to go to paper settings, make the tray "LTR/Plain 1", can't be any other type of paper, then it prints ok. Canon literally matches to the EXACT paper, not just size but type and weight of the paper material! Amazing!

I know I have read plenty of reviews that this printer is not user friendly but now I am experiencing it!

Ever since Windows 10 update back in March of 2020 that caused my computer to crash.

Here are the steps for anyone who needs help.

Canon Printer Touch Panel.

1. <Home> >Paper Setting

2. For Multifunction tray select "LGL Plain 1

3. For Tray 1 select "LTR Plain 1"

4. Select frquently used paper sizes > Multi-purpose tray > Select LGL then. Drawer 1 select > LTR

5. Select Apply

Windows 10 >go to settings > Printers and scanners > select your printer and select < Manage

1. Open Printing preference > Paper Quality

2. Tray Selection > Paper source > Automatically Select

3. Media > Plain Paper.

4. Select Advanced >Make sure Paper size is "Letter"

That should work now.

I had this same issue and realized it was due to a software issue. For my wifes computer I used the installation disk and installed everything. When I went up to my pc I forgot the CD so simply downloaded the software from the website. For some reason I experienced issues never being able to get Tray 1 selected instead of the multipurpose tray. Once I realized my wifes computer was not having this issue I took a look at the printer preferences and saw a completely different menu than what I was seeing on my pc. At this point I took the CD and re-installed all the software directly from it and all the issues went away. Not sure what Canon did differently between their downloaded software and the CD software, but they certainly didn't get it right. If you didn't install from CD I highly suggest doing so and see if that fixes your issue.

Before anyone asks, yes, I'm absolutely certain I downloaded the correct software directly from Canon the first time around.

This worked for me as I was able to print from tray one.

From the home screen go to

1. Menu

2. Function settings

3. Printer

3a. printer settings

3b. on the top you will select "Prioritize driver settings when printing

3c. Both multipurpose tray and draw one both should be on.

I found draw one off(actually my wife found this) I give her cudos!!

@Canon, this is insane. You're supposed to be a top printer producer, but instead, you put out products that weren't tested even once. What infuriates your users here, listed:

1. It's nonsense that the multi-purpose tray is set as default

2. Your product manual doesn't have the answer and yet your support forwards all questions there (really helpful)

3. You simply cannot change the default tray from the printer

4. You cannot set the sleep time on this device

It feels like this thing was designed by an engineer who hasn't printed even once.

I really needed to go to the gym to let off steam and not throw this ******* out the window.

Please, respect your customers.

I had the same issue. I agree, the instructions are not very helpful. What worked for me was to set the seetings on the pringter itself for Tray 1 to use Plain Paper 1. The default was Plain Paper 2. On my computer, the printer preferences were set to plain paper. Apparently, the choices of lightweight paper and heavyweight paper tell the printer to use Paper 2 and Paper 3. Its quite possible these mean different things, but making this change made the difference for me.

That did not work for me, so I changed the paper type to "Plain 1"

I have an MF445dw but it works the same way:

Home Screen>Paper Settings> Click on Drawer 1 (the second option)> Choose LTR> Choose Plain 1

The weight of the paper was different so the printer was looking for a heavier paper. When I switched it to the lower weight, and Letter, it worked!
