Automatic paper source issue

I have a new MF 741. I followed instructions in the manual, and anectodal advice online; but cannot set the printer to print automatically from the multipurpose tray when there is paper loaded in it.

I only use the MP tray for checks, and would like to print automatically from the MP tray whenever checks are loaded.

Does anyone have an answer for this problem?

I tried the paper source auto select function, but "apply" is greyed out for turning off drawer 1. It keeps both at the "on" setting.

I tried selecting MP tray in the print dialog window, but then must change it back.

To accomplish this, you'll want to first register the paper on the printer itself.

Next, pull the paper information from the printer
