Selphy CP900 Displaying Question Mark Error When Inserting Memory Card

Using a Canon Selphy CP900 and there appears to be a defect that if you edit the images in Photoshop, the Selphy doesn't recognize the images and refuses to display them on the screen or print them. Just a question mark is displayed. It does this to some images, but not all so I'm thinking it has something to do with the Exif data, but unsure.

There is something on the Canon Support page regarding this error, but no real solution to it.

Hello AUDIOMIND.

This issue may be related to the images on the card. The images may not be in JPEG format or there may be issues with the EXIF data for those particular pictures.

Unfortunately, we would have to advise that you print these particular images from a computer. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

To print from a computer would be a potential solution. However, I have a WIndows 8 computer and since there is no driver for the Selphy CP900 for Windows 8, and since it will not recognize images created on my computer, I cannot print at all!

When will the Windows 8 driver be available? I saw this question posted before. The answer was to call customer support. I called customer cuspport and they said to watch the forums. Hmm...

Please let us know IF a driver is even being worked on, or else I will have to return this printer.

This is very disappointing.

Hi tnorris,

Canon Inc has decided that SELPHY CP series printers will not support Windows 8 (32/64bit).

Because of the development specification required by Microsoft, the CP driver could not support Windows 8. As a result of hardware limitations, WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) approval conditions determined by Microsoft could not be met, so we were not able to obtain the Microsoft logo certification. As a driver without logo certification does not have a digital signature, it could not support Windows 8 which requires a digital signature when installing the driver.

So we may be able to determien what's causing the pictures to not show up when you put the memory card in, I'd like you to try copying the pictures over to the computer, formatting the memory card with your camera, then take a few new pictures and see if they can be read. If so, the previous pictures may have corrupted EXF information, but if the new pictures do show up, formatting the card may have cleared up the corruption and future pictures should be able to be read.

It's too bad that Canon has decided not to support the only OS you can buy on a new Windows PC. That is a HUGE limitation, and I'm sure it will spell the death of the nice little CP900 printer.

Regarding printing from the computer. I am able to print digital camera photos just fine becuase they contain EXIF information. I need to be able to print images that were created on the computer which do not have and never will have EXIF information. Normally one could do this by printing via USB cable, but not anyone with a recent computer running Windows 8.

So I am doubly out of luck. Since the printer is perfectly useless to me, and there is no hope of it being made useful, I would like a refund. How do I go about getting a refund?

Solution: menu, printer setup: info Display = Off.

I have this same problem of the printer displaying the ? for half my photos when printing with a flash drive. I've also tried using different flash drives. They are not editted or cropped photos, all JPEGs and from the same camera. It seems quite random as to which ones are able to print and which are not.

Hello, I had the same problem and now i figured it out. A 3 step procedure:

1. In Canon Selphy printer menu - printer setup - info display - off

2. In photoshop - Save for web -> in the metadata box pick all and then save. Choose the SD card as destination.

3. Put the card in the printer and enjoy the print.

The menu on my Selphy CP900 only has these options: Print all images, ID Photo, Change Settings, and Wireless LAN settings. I do not have a selection called Printer Set Up. I appreciate your tips though. Not sure why mine is different - maybe a different year model. Thanks.

We have a CP810 and have the exact same problem. Very disappointing and a waste of money! I will not be advising anybody to purchase this product. Photos taken will often need to be retouched (edited) so what's the point of having a printer that cannot print retouched photos! The responses from Canon support in this post are not very reassuring.

I have tried out now JPGs on SD card and on usb stick, my JPGs have EXIF data (i create JPGs via aperture; i can see the EXIF on the JPG with different tools. If you do not believe me: => http://goo.gl/oCYNtf is an example of such JPG with exif data but which is not recognized by the printer.)

In both cases (sd card, usb-stick) selphy cp900 does not recognize the JPGs.

An official printer driver for OS-X 10.10 (yosemite) is NOT available.
However, i nice guy created a package for a driver for OS-X 10.10 ... but, it looks like that driver in some cases does not work with WIFI but with USB cable only ... but i have no such usb-cable (see http://goo.gl/oVbLTw)

Conclusion:
I have NO posiibility to print!
I'm really annoyed.

When does Canon provide all the software for OS-X 10.10?

How can i print a JPG when transfering via usb stick or sd card?
(No, i do not want to buy a Windows PC to use my printer).

Please help!

Disappointed in the complete lack of interest from Canon in helping out customers with this issue. My printer doesn't recognise ANY format. Just question marks. Would advise people to avoid purchasing one of these.

Here are my latest findings:

When using a UBS cable the printer may work together with OS-X 10.10 (yosemite), however the file must have the right format (width to height ratio) , otherwise the printer denies to do its work; ... somehow cumbersome ...

If you add one JPG to a SD card or an USB stick: The printer shows a big fat question mark "?" indicating he's not reconizing the file, ... BUT it it will print if you push the "PRINT" button ...
... but you have no other possibilites (no "edit", etc. ...)

I'm happy that i can print now at least "somehow" ... but i'm still very disappointed how bad Canon "supports" MAC users which leads to very limited possibilites with the SELPHY printers ...

I realize this discussion is old, but I wanted to post my fix. As it was pointed out earlier in the thread, pictures coming out of Photoshop cannot be printed. On my CP800, I was having the same issue. What fixed it for me, was in Photoshop when you save the image as a JPEG, there is an option in the "JPEG Options" dialog box (I have CS6) for Format Options. The default is Progressive; those pictures were not working. Choose the Baseline ("Standard") option and the pictures worked!

Here is my solution with GIMP 2.8:

1. open a working image (no question mark displayed on Selphy) with GIMP

2. paste new image over existing one or do your necessary "photoshopping"

3. export image as follows:

Hi It took me 3 days to solve this problem with the Canon printer!!! I manage to print by changing the format of the photo in Photoshop. When you Save As change the format to Baseline ("Standard"). And then it printed. This is my last Canon ever!!! And I am still waiting from Canon for an answer. Hope this can help.

By mistake I pressed the zoom plus button while the screen showed the question mark and my photo suddenly appeared! No logical reason why this happens but it works. Give it a try.
