topic PGI/CLI 250 vs 280 in General Discussion

I have a printer that takes PGI/CLI 250/251 cartridges and another one that takes PGI/CLI 280/281 cartridges. I know the cartridges are not interchangeable, but I'm curious as to why they aren't? What's the actual difference between the two? Thank you.
