Follow Johns advice, and if you don't understand what the "root directory" is, it will be the card itself, not a directory per se. In my case (see example) it is d: so you can just copy/paste to the open area of the card. This is Windows, but should look basically the same on your mac. Of course, yours will be 1.8.1 🙂

Newton

Canon R5 v 18.1 firmware update not accessible after download. I have an iMac M1 Pro with Monterey 12.6.1, The download goes to my desktop with a disk icon. 2 folders show when clicking: EOSR5181.FIR AND UPDATE-PROCEDURE-PDF. When I click the.FIR I get a "no application error message". The other file opens reliably as a PDF.

Please advise.

FL, thanks for your clear response. I should add that I’ve done several updates prior without issues. And I did read the pdf.

Yes, I see that on my card. I have a full battery. I neglected to add that when I put the card in the camera (set to P) that the camera does not detect the file. After going to the menu, and firmware - I get a message, Memory card containing firmware is required to update. It doesn’t see the card with the .fir file on it. I’ve tried it with 2 different cards, multiple times. Any thoughts?

The .FIR file needs to be copied to the SD Card. Remove the CFexpress card from the camera for the update.

OK success! I had not removed the pdf file after loading the complete download on my card. I also used the SD card and not the CF Express, which I also removed from the camera. Thanks all for your various guidance. Much appreciated.

I know people have success with that. But I never have removed my CF or CFe cards. But I do always use the SD card for f/w updates. It's funny though, I was going to suggest that because others have said it worked 🙂

I'm just happy that the OP got the f/w updated! WooHoo!!!

Newton
