Those Godox speedlite AF Assist Beams are designed for mirrorless cameras. Those are actually LED lights. Canon's speedlites don't actually use IR either.

Hello, I had this camera for around five years and during a job it decides to not focus on the person infront but at a random spot. I tried turning it off and on to see if that would help but it changed to a different spot. No matter if I pressed down to focus on the person it wouldn't change then I tried using the menu to see if something I needed to change but it won't pop up when pressed on it. I thought it was the lense so I switched lense and it was till the same.

Have you tried resetting the camera back to factory default. After that test the camera with the memory card removed and the lens removed.

Were you using lenses via a lens adapter? I had an M50 and the AF kept jumping to wherever it wanted to, on one occasion. The lens adapter was not quite securely attached (it was not rotated far enough to lock in place) and it caused the issue. I had the genuine Canon adapter. I have heard on several occasions that if you have a 3rd party adapter, even when properly fitted onto the lens mount, it has some play. Enough for the connection to be affected and the lens to stop focusing or causing erratic AF behaviour like you mentioned. One lady had a Viltrox adapter and 2 screws had fallen out of it, causing a wobbly connection between lens and lens adapter.

That particular day, that is exactly what happened. The AF kept jumping all over the place. The camera functioned fine, but the AF was erratic. I rotated the lens a little and the adapter turned with it (because the lens was correctly on the adapter) and then it clicked into place with an audible click. After that, the AF was good again. I realise though that you did say "usually" the lens won't function. It may have been alternating between making a connection and not making a connection (just not quite turned enough to make a sold connection).

EF lenses flat out won't work at all if its not mounted correctly. EF-M may be a completely different story.

I've heard of strange things happening with lenses that you described. They ended up having a failed ribbon cable. Which is a costly repair which turns into lens replacement. But what the OP says that they can't access the menu system system sounds like more problems are going on. They also said they switched out lenses too. But the problem persist. The menu should always be available.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I think the OP's camera maybe dead. When the body starts to go the camera begins to lockup and the menu system becomes unavailable. This ended up happening to my friends mom's Rebel. She ended up getting pre-ordering the original 6D. She replaced that body back in August after the image sensor failed and went with the original R6. @BrianDavies do you own any EOS Bodies EOS 35mm Film Body, EOS Digital SLR/ EF or EF-S, EOS M/ EF-M Series, EOS R/ RF or a Power Shot camera.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I have been shooting Canon cameras for 35 years. My first SLR was the EOS 620, followed by an EOS 100 and an EOS 10QD and then an EOS 3. I shot many weddings, portraits and model portfolios etc. with those cameras. My first DSLR was the EOS 20D and I have had many DSLR and mirrorless cameras since then. I still have my 7D Mk II with battery grip, plus 3 mirrorless cameras, the latest being the R7. I am not some newbie to cameras or photography.

I never thought about it, to be honest, I wasn't sure if it was just boasting what gear we have. I have 3 Canon speedlites (430EX II, 430 EXIII and 270EX II), but they just sit on a shelf. I use 2 Godox AD200 Pros, 1 Godox AD180, 1 Godox V1 and 1 Godox V860ii with various modifiers. I also have, but don't use, my original Nissin GT 6000 (GN 60 in metres) hammerhead flash from the film days LOL. I have 4 studio strobes with modifiers too (just cheapies) in my home studio, where I just shoot for fun, on occasion.

How do you like your 430EX III-RT. My hot shoe failed and the board failed. The IR AF Assist Beam was visible in my pictures. I had it repaired under warranty. While in for the warranty repair I acquired a 470EX-AI speedlite.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Mine is only the 430EX III and not the RT version. I bought that quite a long time ago for my 80D and wasn't using it with a trigger. It is a good flash and has never given me issues, but the reason I moved to Godox was the large lithium-ion batteries which give the flashes far more shots per battery charge and faster recycle times. The V860ii gives the same power output as the 430EX III (measured on a flash meter), but it gives 650 full-power flashes on a single charge.Godox rates it as a higher GN, but that is only because they rate it with the head zoomed in to a narrower beam to cover a longer lens.

I have had a lot of luck with Canon and it is part of the reason I stayed with them all these years. The first (and only) Canon product that ever failed on me was an EF 70-300mm USM II lens which needed some assembly replaced under warranty when it was about 2 years old. Everything else has just worked perfectly. I had a tripod collapse with my EOS 620 and it fell onto a stone church floor. The camera had 2 tiny scratches on the pentaprism and still worked perfectly up until the day I gave it away to a young guy who was wanting to get into film. photography.

Has your Godox products been compatible with your R series cameras. My friend's R5 doesn't like her Godox speedlite. The IR AF Assist Beam fires when it's not supposed too. When the camera decided the body lamp wasn't enough. With my 600EX II-RT mounted to the R5 the body lamp never fired for AF Assist. The 600EX II-RT was firing an Intermittent Flashes/ pre-fires for AF Assist. This was the first time I've seen it do it.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I have had no issues at all with Godox flashes or triggers and they are very reliable. Is your 600EX II-RT pre-flashing for focus assist, or do you have red-eye reduction turned on in the camera menu which causes the flash to pre-flash to shut down the subject's pupils before firing the flash when capturing the image? I was under the impression that Canon mirrorless cameras cannot use the infra-red focus assist beam which the DSLRs used to use.

The speedlite is pre-flashing for AF Assist. If I turn off the AF Assist Beam. The speedlite stops pre-flashing. All of my speedlites behave this way. The 430EX III-RT and 470EX-AI do the same thing when set to IR AF Assist. But I noticed that if a color filter is fitted. With the AF Assist Beam emission method set Intermittent Flashes/ pre-flashing. The camera body emits the AF Assist Beam. When the speedlite has a color filter fitted. If I remove the color filter. The speedlite emits the AF Assist Beam everytime. My friends EL-1 manual states the exact thing above. No mirrorless cameras from ANY manufacturer can you the IR AF Assist Beam.

-Demetrius

Current Gear: EOS 5D Mark IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III USM, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM, EF 85mm F/1.8 USM, EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM, 430EX III-RT, 470EX-AI & 600EX II-RT

Retired Gear: EOS 40D, Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 EX DC OS HSM & EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM
