That's a whole row of dead pixels. Doesn't hurt to try the remapping trick used with single stuck/dead pixels (all sensors have a few).... but I doubt it will be effective with an entire row like that. Most likely, the sensor or another part downstream from it is going bad and needs replacement.

***********
Alan Myers

San Jose, Calif., USA
"Walk softly and carry a big lens."
GEAR: 5DII, 7D(x2), 50D(x3), some other cameras, various lenses & accessories
FLICKR & PRINTROOM

hey guys,

Was hoping someone could tell me what the problem is with my 40d

the line going down the middle ( you may have to zoom in abit)

Thanks Blake

If this is a closed lens/no light shot it looks like a column of bad pixels.

It could be, and looks like, a hot, stuck or dead, pixel. If it is there are ways to map it out or discuise it. They don't fix the pixel(s). They just try to make it so you can't see it. But I will guess that doesn't show up in normal photographs. Does it?

One fix is remapping. Set it is to run the manual sensor cleaning procedure for a minute with the body cap on. This resets the pixel map in order to hide the stuck pixels from your pictures. Works most of the time.

Another is post processing of your photos.

If in fact it is the sensor, it is usually not worht repairing. Probably way more than the value of the camera.
