I can't comment on the flash, but the Canon 75-300 lenses are all very poor optically. There are alternatives that are much better, but we need some more information to give you the most appropriate solutions.

1. Camera or cameras are you currently using?
2. What is your budget?
3. What is your preferred focal range?
4. When you say racing photography, what kind of racing? Horse, yacht, motor, indoor or outside?

Does your 75-300 give you a big enough field of view at that distance? For example, the image you provided does not show the whole car.

If you look across the range of images you consider successful, what focal ranges are you shooting at?

Also, in part as a matter of curiosity, what is the reaction from drivers or the organizers to you using a flash so close to the racing?

Most sporting events do not allow flash photography. Are you having problems with low light. You can look into the Canon EF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS III USM or the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lenses. Since the lenses are stabilized this will help in low light. The 75-300mm is one of Canon's worst lenses but it can be a good starting point.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT, 600EX II-RT

If you shoot only up to say, 200mm, then we can look at a different class of lens to find you the best solution.

Hi OP, so your shooting with a FF equivalent of between 320-480mm. Are you having problems with low light too. I know you mentioned that you used a speedlite.

Again my comment was not aimed at you but at the OP, and that is significant as they want a better optic than their current 75-300 - I honestly don't see ANY of that model as being any better.

As to the DO version... It's a fair question Demetrius! I don't own one, but Canon leant me one for a while and from my tests I consider it inferior to the L version and arguably the Nano USM MkII as well. That is one reason I chose to avoid it: that, and the cost which is very high. Anyway with three 70-300 units, even I decided enough was enough...

I believe OP will be pleased by 70-300mm better optics compared to the 75-300mm. Also thanks Trevor for answering my question about the 70-300mm DO lens.

-Demetrius

40D, 5D IV, EF 16-35mm F/2.8L III, EF 24-70mm F/2.8L II, EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 50 F/1.8 STM

430EX III-RT, 600EX II-RT

Hi Demetrius - no problems!

I think, given the distances at which the shots were being taken, and the size of the subject - cars, after all - that the 70-200 would do, in which case the EF 70-200 f/4 L units would have been a good fit, or even on of the Sigma or Tamron units in that range, but if 70-300 is the range, then I think that either the MkI or MkII versions of the 70-300 (non-L) lenses would work, the choice then depends on the price and availability.
