I've been having a problem recently with the R6. On occasion, I press the shutter button to take a photo and the shutter fails to work. It has failed when using AF and also using MF. It's failed with my Canon 100-400mm and with my Tamron wide-angle. Turning the camera off and back on usually fixes the problem for a while but the problem eventually recurs. Removing the battery and reinserting them works temporarily.

I'm using the current firmware. In fact, I upgraded to that firmware a week or so before the problem started. Canon customer service suggested I clear all the custom functions. Problem with that is I want to use those functions.

Any ideas?

Try resetting the camera.

If that works add your settings back one at a time to see if the problem comes back.

kvbarkley's suggestion is about all you can do. I suspect that Canon may not take the camera for repair until you do what they suggested. Even if they do, they will reset it themselves, so you'll loose those settings anyway.

I know it's a PIA, but that is what I would do. I have the R6 and have not had that problem.

Newton

Save the current camera settings in a custom shooting mode before resetting the camera.

Judging from your description of the lenses, it sounds like they are EF mount. Which brand of mount adapter are you using? Canon?

Well, I reset the camera and then restored the settings. I shot nearly 500 pics over the weekend and so far, no problems. I believe the problem may be solved. Thanks to all who responded.

May I ask if you reset the basic settings only, or the "other settings" as well?

The basic settings only. However, the problem has occurred several times since the original post. Removing/reinserting the battery seems to be the most reliable immediate fix.

Hi @Sborg,

If the problem is recurring, it's not something you should live with.

After 2 yrs you should be to a point with your camera where a reset and reconfiguration is not a big deal.

Reset the camera's main and custom settings, then retest. If the problem doesn't reoccur then it's a change or combination of settings you've made. If its still happening the camera likely has a hardware issue. It should be returned to Canon for inspection.

After years of use, I would expect a problem like this (if related to hardware) to get worse, and not stay the same. How someone could live with this uncertainty for any length of time is unimaginable to me. Owning a camera that won't take a picture when the shutter release is pressed. Sort of like owning a car that only starts sometimes. That works well when you are trying to go somewhere. Think of all the missed shots.

Popping the battery out. This is no way to live and certainly not how Canon envisions it's product to be used. Not to mention the user experience and resulting frustration.

Please follow the advice above. Fully reset, don't re-customize and determine if it's a setting or hardware. By all means solve the behavior and enjoy the camera as it's was intended to be used.
