In the 1980s Canon had a line of film cameras named T50, T60, T70, T80, and T90.

I don’t believe the “T” in the current Canon EOS Rebel series really stands for anything. Only North American EOS Rebel cameras use the “T” naming convention as the same cameras are named “Kiss” in Japan, and “xxxD” in Europe. (500D, 550D, 600D, etc)

The very first Canon EOS Rebel “T” cameras were the 2002 Ti and 2004 T2, and they were actually film cameras.

The first digital Rebel to use the “T” was the 2009 T1i.

I don't know the exact answer but T series introduced much more automation to the SLR camera, making it almost as easy to use as a point and shoot camera.
