I have been shooting with various EOS 1 series for years including shooting soccer in some pretty heavy rain and those bodies have been fine. I try to use weather protection when possible but the gear has gotten quite a bit of rain on multiple occasions without any issues. But the weather sealing on them only applies with certain lenses mounted including most of the telephoto L series which have a proper mating gasket to weatherproof the lens to body interface AND it also assumes the camera is in good condition. Seals can deteriorate with time and use.

There is nothing worse than salt water for electronics and I definitely wouldn't want an ocean splash on any of my gear. The initial problem is the high electrical conductivity of salt water which can create immediate permanent electrical damage and if a splash occurs don't just turn the camera off but also pull out the battery immediately. The longer term issue is the corrosion that occurs including attacking the seals around the leads of electrical components such as electroytic caps which will release their own corrosive chemical stew if the seals are breached.

I don't think I would have the nerve to do this to one of my DSLR bodies but the standard electronic treatment for an item that gets a heavy dose of salt water is to do an immediate very thorough fresh water flush ending with a complete rinse using distilled water. When done immediately, electronic gear is often saved by this rather drastic treatment but I wouldn't bet my life or career on any piece of electronic gear that has had serious salt water exposure. With just a splash, invert the camera so that water won't pool at the control seals and then wipe clean immediately.

Electronics can sometimes survive surprising abuse. When my 2008 Cadillac CTS was brand new I did an initial 1,000 mile oil change and when I went to put my clothes in the dryer I found my freshly washed key fob. That was the first car I owed with keyless ignition and it was a somewhat involved fob. I removed the battery, did a thorough flush with WD-40 (the WD originally stood for water displacer), and then dried it out. It got a new battery and the extremely clean fob worked perfectly although for several months I carried both key fobs with me just in case. Six years later I traded the car in on a 2014 ATS and the fob was fine so it survived machine washing with Tide detergent but that doesn't come close to what salt water can do.

A related issue is when moisture and particularly salt residue builds up on a camera body which is later brought inside from a hot environment and allowed to cool. As the body cools, unless there are other relief vents built into the body it may suck air past the seals as the interior cools and interior air pressure drops. When this happens, any moisture and corrosive products around the seals will be drawn into the camera body. Never quickly cool a wet camera body, dry the exterior as well as possible and preferably leave it in a warm but sheltered environment to finish drying as the temperature and pressure equalizes. Taking a hot camera into a cool cave can also cause this issue.

Rice is a decent desiccant but i keep several packs of silica gel around for use primarily with electronic projects but for other emergencies also. It is readily available and works better than rice. Silica gel can be carefully baked at very low temperature to drive the moisture out so that it can be reused indefinitely. Silica gel cartridges used for mil spec gear are typically of the color changing type and it turns pink when it becomes saturated turning back to blue when ready for use. Some consumer silica gel is also color changing but if you only have the regular non-color changing type you can still heat the loose "raw" pellets at up to 300 degrees but don't bake the enclosed packets at over 230 degrees. When traveling I keep a couple of large packs of silica gel in sealed baggies in my camera bag just in case. I felt it is safer to use labeled silica gel packages when traveling but a couple of decades ago when entering Cuba I was asked to allow them to cut them open while clearing customs so it can lead to questions however rice would probably be an even bigger issue because you might run into agricultural inspection issues when crossing some borders as control of agricultural pests and diseases are of prime importance.

Rodger

Hello,

I was taking pictures on the beach with my 6D when a wave splashed some water on my camera. I didn't think anything of it and kept shooting for a few more minutes. Back in my air conditioned room, some of the buttons of the camera stopped workind. For example, pushing the playback button took me to live view.

I removed the battery and the SD card, left the latches opened, and put the camera in a plastic container with rice for two days. After two days, I took the camera out, put the battery and SD card back inside, and tried it. More buttons were working but the "Set" button didn't.

I put the camera back in the rice overnight. The next day, all buttons were working correctly until I took the camera outside to take some pictures and some of buttons started acting again. I am in Mexico in the state of Vercruz where it is very hot and humid outside.

After my last try, I dried the camera with a blow drier and put the camera in front of a fan. Thatt is what is happening right now.

What else do you recommend that I do? The camera works just fine inside the air conditioned bedroom but not outside.

Thanks,

Vincent

My guess is that you got saltwater inside the camera on the circuit boards.

When it dries there is no conduction, but when you go outside the humidity condenses on the cold camera and the slat tracks become wet and conduct.

Canon might be able to clean it if you send it in for service.

Got the same problem after a trip down into a cold volcano. All my buttons went mad. I dried it and everything worked again. In your case, you have got salt water inside. Don't know if Canon is able to clean it out for you, but you should ask.

Water and a camera usually do not do well together. Salt water and a camera is usually a death sentence. Actually a dunk in salt water best next step is a dunk in clean water.

The rice and other methods are not very good. Very marginal at best. My preffered way is a heating pad for several days. Set it to low and leave it for a long time.

The 6D is not particularly well protected from water almost to the point of, don't get it wet! If the heating pad does not work, you probably lost the camera.

Rice is acting as a simple dessicant. There is nothing a dessicant can do about the salts that were left inside your camera. The remaining salts will attract any moisture in the air, allowing the damage to resume. Salt water readily conducts electricity. I wish you the best, but it is likely that extensive damage has occurred, depending upon how far the salt water penetrated into your camera.

Even with the camera's weather-sealing, water can enter, especially if your lens was not one of the newer, top-tier pro L lenses with its own gasket at the mount, and other weather-sealing. (Not all L lenses are weather-sealed!)

Notably, third-party lenses advertised as "splash-resistant" may not have a gasket at the mount. Sigma is an example of this; I am not sure about others. (It seems, to me, that a gasket at the mount is the single most important gasket!)

Only Canon service, or a similarly-skilled independent repair facility, can determine the extent of the damage.

Hi RexGig and others,

I am sorry for not responding earlier. I drove to the nearest big town (Mexico City) and took the camera to an authorized Canon repair shop. They made an evaluation and determined that the circuit board was damaged. They ordered the parts and are (hopfully) soon going to fix it for a couple hundred dollars.

Fingers crossed!

Thank you all for your help and advice.

Vincent

After using my camera and swapping lenses on a rainy day my set button quit working and several other buttons like the menu button and others started to misbehave. I used a blow dryer on my camera after removing the battery for about 15 minutes on medium heat and that fixed every button problem I had...the 6d had limited moisture or humidity proofing...do keep it dry and blow dry add needed

I'm not certain if the 6D has a weather and dust sealed protection. I know the 7D, 5D, and 1D series camera get weather sealed treatment to varying degrees as do some mid-range models.

But the 6D is an entry full frame camera designed to keep the entry price a little lower.

No Canon cameras are "waterproof". They cannot be submerged ... the seals protect from splashes and moderate rain -- basically water that isn't under any pressure or force. Body seams get gaskets. Dials get o-rings. But if you inspect the memory card and battery doors there are no serious water-tight seals. Also, only some lenses have a weather sealing treatment and ALL of them are "L" series (red ring around the front of the lens). Not all L lenses are weather sealed. You would see a silicone gasket that mates with the lens mounting flange. Zero non-L lenses are weather sealed.

Even with my scuba diving cameras and other electronics... which are aggressively sealed against water even at high pressure... everything must be troweled dry before opening any seals (I never changed the film without first drying the camera thoroughly).

If what is inside your camera actually is water and only water, then you can dry the interior by putting the camera in a sealed bag with desiccant packs to dry the air. It may take several days.

Big mistake to turn on the camera or any electronic device while it is wet. I know it is a natural act but waiting until it is completely dry is best. It can take weeks for the interior to dry thoroughly.
