7D Is it possible to shoot a speaker on stage without being behind the camera?

Howdy!

(I'm new to the 7D.)

I was the host at a local Toastmaster's* club meeting last night. I just purchased this ol' 7D.

I set it up on my tripod. I had a 20-40mm f/2.8 lens on it.

Don't have a clue what lens to use and which settings to record a speaker on stage so it will stay in focus?

Ideas?

*Toastmasters - an organization that helps us learn to talk in front of groups.
