My EOS 50D stops taking pictures after 4-5 shots. It seems like the lens stops communicating with the camera. I can remove the lens, reinstall it, and the same problem persists. I have cleaned the contacts, no change. I am using the Canon ES 5, 55-250 zoom.

It was a problem that did appear suddenly, and there were no preceeding problems before that. I am using the Canon EOS 55-25o zoom lens. I can remove the lens, and reinstall it, and the same problem persists. The camera will take 4-5 pictures normally, and then freeze up. I have cleaned the lens-camera contacts, and replaced battery with another, but---

I haven't used the camera in some time now, as a result.

  Need it again.

Lee Taylor

Of course it makes sense to get a brand new top quality SD card, it is a cheap try. You can reset the camera to factory settings, too, also free to try. When none of that works a new camera is likely the only way to fix your problem.

The reason I got the Canon was that I had an aerial shoot scheduled with two Chechoslovakian jets. I was planning on using my Canon AE-1, and frantically loading rolls of film. A new friend said, "Here, take my EOS 50D instead." After 370 shots in the air during a thunderstorm day over the Mississippi River, I have about two dozen COVER SHOTS, and a magnificent shooting experience.

I bought my 50D that week. I am really looking forward to using it again, on my latest endeavor. Building Hurricane Storm Surge Barriers for the mouths of our two bays, Bay St. Louis and Biloxi Bay here in Mississippi. Then I will start in on getting Storm Surge Barriers built for the rest of the Gulf Of Mexico, and the Atlantic shoreline. Easily, extremely strong, inexpensive, environmentally beneficial and eye-pleasing. Will take about junior college level engineering.

Your help in getting my -50D back up and running will help emmensely. Good pictures of all this is SO important.

Lee

As has been pointed out, third party battery grips can be problematic. But since 1. you say you always used the grip without problem till now, and 2. batteries that won't take a charge are most likely your issue.

If new batteries get the camera up and running then you might want to consider not giving up the advantages of the grip. Just keep in mind that if camera does start acting up again then decide if you want to get a Canon grip or do without.

I realize not everyone might agree with that approach.

I grew up in Vicksburg and used to have a 50D. (Gave it to one of my granddaughters, IIRC.) So your post brought back memories.

Didn't see this response until just now, but it is a big two-battery grip. I am getting new batteries, and will let you know how it all works out. I really don't see the need for the big grip any more, but will still check and see if the new batteries fix the problem, and/or if it is a problem with the grip. Since I have always used the grip, ------but I really think right now that you hit the nail on the head earlier with the comments about "a battery problem". Also have paid close attention to your disgust with non-Canon grips also. -----I think the thing that made me use it to begin with was that the big grip was quite comfortable, and I liked the extra shutter button on it. Plus it was "impressive"./ I mean, we use really exotic cameras like this, not because they are actually needed, but also that they are impressive.

In my work in aerial shots, being bigger and heavier IS NOT an advantage. The basic camera and a decent lens, which I do have, is best. I will forget all the rest in the future.

Wouldn't have thought the grip was that much of a big deal, but now I find there are several different considerations. First there is a selector that I didn't even know existed, OFF, Ch1, Ch 2, AND a separate ON-OFF switch. Two on-off switches on the same grip???? Plus a third one on the camera itself?? Great way to get everyting fouled up, with no real input except intelligence as to what might be wrong. And I obviously didn't have that when I was originally having the problem. At the same time, the camera became much less important in light of everything else that was going on at the time. I just quit using it. Until now.

I do fully agree. Aside from the comfort-of-use idea, I now see no real advantage to the grip. And the additional complexity just means a quantum leap in problem potentials.
