Probably because the methods used to make a card have that much memory didn't exist when the camera was built. Check the Canon support site for a firmware update.

Hi BillyDee,

While your camera is compatible with SDHC memory cards with a capacity of up to 32GB, it's not compatible with the larger SDXC memory card used by your 128GB card.

Hello Canon, I own a Canon Rebel T1i/500D. Are you saying that such camera will only take full advantage of a SD card with a maximum of 32GB?

I also read online where someone said Canon told them it is a waste of money to use a higher than class 6 SD card in a Canon T1i. Please commemt on both of my concerns.

Thank you in advance.
