I have been successful triggering the Yongnuo in S1/S2 mode optically with the SL1's built-in flash. Was just wondering if there was a different way other than a radio trigger as I had read other Canons can send a wireless signal directly from the camera.

Thanks for the advice!

SL1 as wireless master?

Kind of new to DSLR photography and learning about off-camera flash.

Can I use my SL1 as a wireless master for my off-camera Yongnuo 565EXII ? I have had success using the optical trigger when not attaching a TTL cord. Wondering whether the SL1 has the wireless trigger capability, though, without having to buy a radio trigger.

If not, can I trigger the slave without firing the pop-up flash?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The SL1 built-in flash can't control other off-camera flashes using the optical wireless system. It's one of the step-up features of the Rebel T5i models.

You will either need to use the built-in flash or some other kind of triggering device.

See if you can set the Yongnuo to trigger on the Yongnuo flash (they call it S2 mode) - the built-in / pop-up flash emits two flashes - one for exposure calculation before the shutter opens and one for the main exposure.

Or you can use a Canon Speedlite 90EX or ST-E2 or Speedlite 550EX, Speedlite 580EX, Speedlite 580EX II or Speedlite 600EX is going to be needed to trigger the off-camera Yongnuo. You might also find that Yongnuo makes versions of the Canon flashes listed for less money.

The Yongnuo radio triggers like the YN622C are also an option to trigger via radio.

Brian / p4pictures
