TROUBLE Shooting Video

Hi,

My camera is a Canon M3 and recently it keeps stopping half way when shooting videos. It will show a bar at the side and when it stops, it will have 'busy' writen for a long time. HELP ME. ;(

It sounds very much like a slow memory card, what type of card are you using ?

Hi. I use the SanDisk memory card I think a 34 GB . I’ve tried formatting the memory card but it still didn’t work

I guess you might mean 64GB. You need to make sure that you are using a UHS-I SD card. Most 64GB cards are UHS-II, which are not compatible with most Canon cameras.

Yep, it's the UHS-I SD card. what else can I do?

Try another memory card, make sure it is one purchased from a reputable supplier. There are a lot of mis-labelled fake cards around, these are mostly purchased online.

You want a card with a U3 or V30 or higher rating.

SDHC cards go up to 32GB.

SDXC cards are 64GB or larger.

173/60 = 2,88 MB/s.

Your card has 10MB/s as lowest write speed. It should work fine if it isn't broken. Have you also tried to Low level format the card? From the manual page 138:

Perform low-level formatting in the following cases: [Memory card error] is displayed, the camera is not working correctly, card image reading/writing is slower, continuous shooting is slower, or movie recording suddenly stops. Low-level formatting erases all data on a memory card. Before low-level formatting, copy images on the memory card to a computer, or take other steps to back them up.

This card is your problem. Your card may be fine for photo use, but it seems to be much too slow for video use.

The icon you see on your display is the internal buffer warning. When it fills up, the camera stops everything to finish writing data to the card. [see page 174 of the Instruction Manual]

The “80 MB/s” written on the card is misleading. That is the peak write speed, not the continuous, sustained write speed. It seems like every manufacturer labels their products in this way. Try using the card John suggested, SanDisk “Exteme Pro”. I use only these card for both photo and video use, and have never ran into any buffer issues.

I recommend a 32 GB card in Canon cameras. But, if you buy an SDXC card, 64 GB or higher, take extra care to only purchase a UHS-I card. Most SDXC cards are UHS-II, which [most] Canon cameras cannot use. The SanDisk “Extreme Pro” is a UHS-I card, so you should be fine with that model.

Also, beware of buying cards on web eBay and Amazon. There are a lot of counterfeit products out there. You have a nice camera, so do not compromise its’ performance with a cheap card, or a bogus card. It would be Ike buying a nice new car, and then only using the cheapest gas and oil you could find.

In the format menu, press INFO. Then format. Page 138 in the manual from Canon.
