Hello!

Is it OK (i.e. as desinged) the video recorded with c-log (ISO 400) produces obvious noise in shadows? Here is the example of videos. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Z9Lzo50aEuUAGYD_pFufqcEEl1Rzhnef?usp=sharing Sure the video recorded with no c-log has more contrast and crashed blacks but when I raise the shadows it's not as noisy as c-log recorded one..

Thank you!

Rustam, did you shoot 8bit or 10bit C-log? The 8bit is more like a gimmick, not much recovereable. What's your histogram for the dark fragment? For C-log it's better when the histogram has a slight offset to the right. How did you grade it? If you push the S curve too much - the noise is unavoidable.

Also, if you upload to Google/YT - their compression sucks, and it rather looks like some compression artifacts / low bit rate issues 🙂

Thanks!

As I know there is no bit depth choice for Mark IV. No matter how I expose there is some noise on dark parts of the image. No grade here for c-log file.

You can download from google drive instead of watching directly from there 🙂

I looked at the specs - it seems it's an 8bit 4:2:2, about 10 stops DR. While it doesn't sound like too much it's still probably better than no Log.

https://www.abelcine.com/articles/blog-and-knowledge/tech-news/canon-log-for-the-5d-mark-iv

"Canon says that, under certain circumstances, horizontal noise stripes may appear in 5D Mark IV Canon Log footage in dark or low-contrast scenes or when using a lower ISO (such as 400). While we didn’t encounter this behavior in our testing, disabling Peripheral Illumination Correction and shooting with a brighter exposure and bringing the signal level down in post (to slightly "crush the blacks") is recommended to mitigate the issue. Kudos to Canon for being transparent about this issue. More information is available here."

Well, kind of... They gave you a choice - either crush blacks completely or make them noisy 😉

By the way this https://drive.google.com/file/d/16GXN1qLQZrlJs0Bgb50I0Nx-R7DPAWfR/view?usp=sharing was shut outdoor and still have some noise on girl's black jacket... Well I can live with that. DaVinci Denoiser works quite nice. I simply wanted to know if it's normal for that camera 🙂
