70D Is there a way to control audio while recording video?

I have figured out how to control the audio manually prior to entering the video record mode (no thanks to the manual) but can’t figure out how to control it once the camera is recording.

Hello Sesweitzer,

To control the audio manually while recording video the camera would need to be set to the Creative Zone recording modes. This would be P, Av, Tv or M. Recording in Auto will give you less options to record through.

I’m not sure we are talking about the same thing. I come from the video side of the business and am used to adjusting my audio WHILE I’m recording. With the 70 D I can figure out how to set the level PRIOR to entering the Record mode but once the camera is Recording, I can’t figure out how to adjust the audio while the red record light is on. Am I missing something obvious?

Hello Sesweitzer,

Since the EOS 70D is a digital SLR and not a camcorder, the sound recording options are different than what you might be used to. Prior to the start of recording, the EOS 70D must be set to manual sound recording before you start the video recording. This is the way to control audio whilst recording footage.

I was afraid of that. Setting levels prior to recording is fine as long as levels don’t change during recording. I know there is also the Auto audio mode but that’s like shooting stills in the Auto mode - purely for amateurs.

Tim, if Canon were to introduce a software update that allowed one of the dials to increase or decrease record level during recording, that would really elevate the 70D's standing as a video device. Is it possible?

I was recording a musician the other day who turned up his amp during a song and was stuck with the manual level I'd set before he started. It's a helpless feeling knowing you've either got to settle for distortion or stop and restart the recording, losing part of the song.

Canon has allowed both the 5D Mk III and 1Dx to control audio levels while recording video. I suspect it is intentionally absent on the 70D.

"Magic Lantern" is not yet available for the 70D, but it will alow audio level adjustment while recording video on the 5D Mk II, 60D and other cameras.

I completely agree that the 70D needs the ability to adjust audio levels while recording. I realize that Canon assumes most people who are using the camera for video will be recording audio separately, but that isn't a reason to simply leave this option out because there are times we'd shoot audio straight to the camera (I do a lot of wedding videos and often send audio straight to the camera or at least use the camera's audio record as a backup).

I would assume a software update could give us this ability. If this camera is meant to be more for video, as Canon's marketing has indicated, this seems like an oversight that would be a big positive to the camera if they added it.

I would also add that passing audio out the HDMI port or audio out jack is also imperative for video recording, as I also use this for event recording and need to monitor the audio constantly. I am patiently waiting for Magic Lantern to add the 70D to their list of supported models, as this would greatly help in this respect. Canon needs to address this very important issue and could easily add this in a software update.

When on safari, the wind blowing into the mike is annoying, is there away to mute that?

Welcome to the Canon Forum!

There is a Wind Filter function you can enable in the menu.

Press MENU.
Select [Camera/Video #2] tab.
Select [Sound Recording].
Select [Wind Filter/Attenuator].
Enable the Wind Filter.

Thank you, I found it. If I shoot in scn will it still work? I am going on an african safari and want to avoid that awful wind sound, just wanting the sounds of the jungle.

To deal with this, you will likely want an external microphone (the Røde "Videomic" series is very popoular... these microphones include a mounting bracket which slides into the hot-shoe -- where you'd normally attach a flash).

AND... you also probably want to put a wind muff on the microphone (these things are also commonly called a "Deadcat") -- it's the furry thing you see wrapped around microphones when using them outdoors. The Deadcat doesn't come with the microphone... it's sold as an optional accessory. Their sole purpose is to reduce the wind noise that a microphone would otherwise have if used in a windy environment.

Tim, your answer is not sound or valid! The more expensive Canon cameras have the ability to control audio levels on screen while recording so does that make them camcorders??? Ha! No, it makes them better at recording audio levels appropriate to the circumstances. Please be honest in your replies. It is more likely a decision based on protecting sales of the more expensive Canons.

Phil, you should read the QUOTED text in my last reply to katcoe1 in which was specifically about wind noise. If you drop the audio gain on the mic then you'll drop all sound (including sound you want to record.). A wind muff (deadcat) is designed to greatly reduce wind noise without reducing other sound. You cannot selectively reduce wind noise on the cameras built-in mic (regardless of camera cost).
