@John_ wrote:

It could work and those 3rd party grips do work but with limited functions, far less function then the Canon grips. I just saw another 3 party grip today for the T6, it costs a lot less money but you get less too and it had an external remote shutter cord that enables exposures from the grip. The Canon grip has transmit and receive data lines and contacts built in which tie into the cameras communication system enabling much more functions from the grip. There are a lot more components in the Canon grip Third party grip either can't duplicate the data lines and internal parts and programming needed to make them work or won't because it will drive the price up to a point where buying one will not be so attractive.

Besides the functions on the Canon grip, it performs just like an external power bank just like the ones for phones and other devices by pairing up 2 batteries and increasing its capacity 2X MAH while the battery voltage remains the same as a single battery in the camera. The camera would not like it if the battery voltage was double and would go Poof!

2 batteries with the same voltage and MAH capacity in parallel would equalize so if initially, let's say when inserted one was at 90% and the other was at 80% they would both settle at 85%.

I suppose Canon could have designed circuitry to switch from one battery to another at a predetermined level into their grips but in my opinion, that would just add unnecessary costs, And how would the battery level indicator react? Would it show a low battery symbol and then all of a sudden shoot back up to full? I have no doubt both batteries are used simultaneously.

No, there are so many false conclusions and assumptions in this post that I do not know where to begin. First and foremost, you cannot compare a grip made for a camera body that is designed to use one, to a grip for a camera body not designed to use one.

I have used battery grips on cameras designed to use one made by Canon and Vello. I have had two 7D2 bodies, one with a Canon grip, and one with a Vello grip. They were functionally identical in every way. The only obvious differences seemed to be the physical tolerances of the machining of the mechanical parts, and the shape and texture of the portrait grip itself.

The Canon grip had the identical “rubber” coating, I will call it for the sake of argument. The Vellow grip had a rubber coating that felt a little different from the 7D2 camera body. The shape and layout of the Canon grip more closely matched that of the grip on the body of a 7D2, while the Vellow felt like it had a different shape, and the buttons were not quite in the same positions. I would assume that you cannot make it physically identical without being sued in court.

Do not mistake extended battery life as proof positive that the batteries are simply connected in parallel, which could be an electrical hazard. Batteries can be connected in parallel with a clever arrangement of diodes and resistors in a fashion similar to a full wave rectifier, which is probably what is happening inside of third party grip for a T5, which had no Canon grip because it was not designed to accommodate one.

There is no denying that a camera can identity each battery separately, including which position it occupies inside of the grip. This would not be possible if the batteries were connected either in parallel or in series.

I agree with your conclusion that adding switching circuitry to a grip would not be cost effective. How would the battery level indicator react? Like I have already said, the camera can read each battery separately, which strongly suggests that each battery is connected to the camera body independently of the other battery. A grip works with one or two batteries.

I've been looking for a battery grip for my T7i. Unfortunately there hasn't been one - at least no grip made by Canon.

Today I've seen that Canon UK claims that there is a grip: the BG-E8.

Have a look on their website: https://store.canon.co.uk/canon-bg-e8-battery-grip/4516B001/?nav=accessories%2Ccameraaccessories%2Cbatterygrips

It's quite confusing. And in fact I don't believe that the BG-E8 fits the T7i.

So my question is: Does anyone actually use that grip with his T7i?

Well, that website does guarantee it is compatible with:

EOS 800D

EOS 750D

EOS 760D

EOS 700D

EOS 650D

EOS 600D

EOS 550D

And I found a bunch of them on Amazon including the BG-E18, not E8, which I ordered already for my T6i. The UK might just use different part numbers. If you don't get confirmation here then ask the good people at BH Photo. Doesn't the T7i use LP-E17 batteries? Whatever you do don't buy it from overseas in case you have issues you'll get headaches along with them.

I am almost positive the BG-E18 battery grip will work on the T7i. Here is what I would do, purchase one from a site/seller with a liberal return policy and try it.

Canon, as well as most if not all OEM's, will not support. recommend or give advice on third party products but I am talking about a Canon battery grip, made by Canon. The people at Canon rarely go the extra mile with their answers so if it is not in the user manual, which it is not, that is all they will tell you My only other advice is to call/email BH Photo and ask their customer service or another camera store

Ok best of luck to you!

Since that Canon UK site listed my T6i along with yours for that grip it has to be the E18 but with UK number of E8. I think you can trust that UK Canon site but any warranty issues will be a nightmare, you will have to ship it back to the UK. most likely on your dime too.

As a side note, I just emailed Adorama Camera with this question because I am curious now too! There's still no grip for that camera.

So it's their mistake. And it was a wise decision not to trust the Canon-website.

What a pity!

Thanks again, guys!

And I also just got an email back from the good people at Adorama Camera who also said the BG-E18 is not compatible with the T7i but Canon will be releasing one shortly. I explained how that UK site confused the issue.

Hi John!

Yes, the website is confusing. And it is disappointing that there isn't a grip for the T7i.

But Adorama told you that Canon will release a grip? Shortly? That sounds great! Canon didn't tell me about that. They only confessed that their website is wrong.

The T7i is a good camera and Canon should release a grip. Well, we will have to wait. I really hope that Adorama is right and that Canon will do so.

Have a great day!

I do not care what Adorama says. If Canon did not release a grip when the camera was released, then they are not suddenly going to release one more than a year later. It is not going to happen, at least not from Canon.

Besides, like I pointed out above, the battery compartment lacks the extra contacts needed to make a batttery grip more than just a battery holder. There are no provisions to connect a shutter button through the battery compartment.

The Rebel T5 lacked control contacts, too. Third party manufacturers made “grips” with an external wire that plugged into the remote shutter input, which allowed for the shutter button to work on the grip. But, you still had no main wheel to control shutter speed, and the external wire meant the port was continuously exposed. They were only good as a battery holder, which is really not too bad of a deal.

Yeah, go figure that one out! I guess it is a wait and see deal. Will be interesting to see if that UK site removes it from the list of battery grips.

@John_ wrote:

Yeah, go figure that one out! I guess it is a wait and see deal. Will be interesting to see if that UK site removes it from the list of battery grips.

In addition to the lack of control contacts, I would also be worried about the actual operation of a third party grip.

Consider how a grip works. First and foremost, some cameras are not designed for use with a battery grip. A battery grip does not connect two batteries in parallel, which could cause the batteries to short out one another.

Cameras that use battery grips seem to only use one battery at a time, and alternate between the two batteries as their charge gets used up. I am not so sure that a camera not designed for a battery grip has the smarts to do that.

Maybe I am wrong about how a grip works, or how a camera interacts with the batteries. One thing is certain, though. The batteries are not connected in parallel, as that would smoke the batteries.

I can look in my menu at the battery status, and I can see the percentage charge remaining on each battery. Immediately after a recharge, the will both read 100%. After a little bit of use, one may read 98%, while the other may still read 100%.

If I take some more shots, then the second battery will start showing signs of discharge. It might drop to 96%, while the first will stay at 98%. At this point it might switch back to the first battery discharging.

To me, it strongly suggests that the camera body can read the remaining charge on the batteries, and switches between using one or the other. What does that tell you about how a battery grip might work?
