I recommend turning that option off (not allowing taking pictures without card).

Once I had stumbled upon a beautiful fly (yes I know I'm weird) that really cooperated with me, setting up my camera for a long macro session where I took several hundred pictures and they looked gorgeous on the LCD (I could see the lenses on its eyes). Much to my chagrine, I did not have any memory card and my could-ve-been-great pictures were non-existent. Still beat myself up over that incident (happened 4 years ago)

You need to go into Menu and disable the option that allows taking photos without card.

I dont understand why Canon sets the default as Enable on consumer level cameras that will likely be used by beginners.
