Any ideas why the camera won't format a seemingly compatible memory card?

Bad card. Write protect tab. Slow card.

If you have a card reader try copying some files to the card that way and see if you can read the files from the card. Try formatting the card in a desktop or laptop computer. then attempt to reformat the card in the camera.

Is this new or used card? Is there already images or other data written to the card?
