I have a Rebel T1i with the 18-55 IS lens and have lost the software disc that came with the camera. My old pc died so my husband built me a new computer. I tried to download the software online, but it just keeps sending me in a neverending loop of picking my camera model. I don't see any software options or zip folders. Can somebody please help me?

I tried to load my pics to directly to Adobe, but that isn't working for some reason. I'm in the middle of a project and really need the pics from my camera so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you don't have the original CD you will have to download the EOS Solution disk image first. Install that and then you can install the updates. The updates won't work if they can't find an original installation.

Yeah, I figured it was an update and not the actual EOS Solution Disk. I can't seem to find the disk as an option. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong area? I even typed the solution disk in the search bar and got over 1400 things to sort through. I'm finding the canon site a little less than useful. It says "download this first", but it doesn't provide a direct link. lol. I'll keep trying to find it. Thanks for your help. I do understand I need the original before adding updates. Thanks again.

Sequential updating is not required. The update is a complete program. It just needs to see an original installation. There are even hacks available to trick the Registry; people used that method prior to Canon releasing the Solution Disks.

Anyplace it can be found will work. I just happen to know its on the 1D4 site.

Subsequent updates were posted online, but those were not freestanding images and would install only if you already had the base version installed. If you lost your Solution Disk, you could continue to install updates, but you couldn't do any more original installations. If you wanted another solution disk, you had to buy another camera.

Then a few years ago, ultra-thin laptop and tablet computers became popular, and many of those had no provision for reading a CD, rendering the Solution Disk useless. Users complained, of course, so Canon conceded and posted a version of the Solution Disk (I believe it was no. 29A) on their Web site for download. It's still there for those who need access to earlier versions of Canon's software.

But for their newer software, notably EOS Utility V3 and DPP V4, Canon has adopted a different paradigm: All software releases, including updates, are fully installable, obviating the need for a Solution Disk. But to download them, you're required to provide the serial number of a Canon camera that the software supports.

Most of the confusion that one sees, in this forum and elsewhere, regarding Canon software installations is due to the two different, but coëxisting, distribution methods.
