topic Is a T6i (750D) worth the upgrade from a Rebel XS (1000D) for me? in EOS DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras

Hey everyone!

I now have my 1000D for about 6 years. During this time, I used it for family parties, nature pictures, some wildlife photography, but mostly on vacation trips (citytrips, beaches and so on). The last couple of years, I started getting familiar with most of the settings and capabilities of my DSLR. However, when we're travelling I mostly take the pictures in one of the automatic modes. Only when I'm not completely happy with the result, I switch to the M mode.

(I also recently bought an EF-S 55-250mm.)

I'm now thinking of upgrading to a newer (better) DSLR, but I'm not really sure whether this upgrade will be worthwhile for me. I'm looking at the 700D and 750D. (Or would it be better to wait for the 800D?)

I understand it isn't easy to choose a DSLR for someone else, but any kind of advice is very welcome. Thanks!

Dimi

It depends on how serious you are about photography. The T6i is a much more capable camera than the XS, and it will accept your current lenses, allowing you to treat your XS as a working spare. But if you aren't sure you need the T6i's improvements, buying a new camera may be a waste of money.

As for whether you should wait for the next model, I'd guess not. While they issue a new Rebel almost every year, only a few of them (XTi, T2i) have been regarded as game changers. The T6i and its companion show signs of making that list, so one might expect somewhat less improvement from the T7i.

A newer camera will be an upgrade over your XS. You could expect faster frame rate, better autofocus system and better high ISO performance. But, those improvements really won't mean much for what you listed as your primary shooting interests.

Decide which of these advantages will result in better photos for your use:

http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T6i-vs-Canon_EOS_Digital_Rebel_XS/detailed

If you can't identify a specific shortcoming of your XS I would suggest keep using it until it breaks or until you find it starting to limit what you want to shoot.

"I understand it isn't easy to choose a DSLR for someone else ..."

It is, that is true ! But I can tell you what I would do. I would get the T6i today. Never wait on a newer model to come out even though it may be the greatest. Waiting on tomorrow leaves a lot of empty yesterdays.

In your case there is nothing that isn't improved on the T6i vs your XS. Nothing! Everything is better. However, always remember, most of the time improvement comes from better lenses over better cameras. A good example is the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens. It would make a significant upgrade, too.

It and the T6i might just be the ultimate Rebel combo.
