I really can't help with your particular issue but my method for getting files on the computer is to use a card reader and simply copy then delete the files. No mysteries there.

I also always insert and remove the card from the reader (asuming it's not built in) while it is not powered by the computer.

alias RAW files

I am just learning to download my pics to the Canon Digital Photog. program for processing RAW files. Somehow, 2 files downloaded my JPEG/RAW files and now only the RAW/CR2 files are left. The icon now appears with a shortcut type symbol and/or alias's and I am unable to view them at all now. It asks to delete alias... but that removes the pic altoghether. I would really like to retrieve these and they are no longer on my camera. Suggestions?
