Hello all, new member of the canon community and also new to photography. I started off using a Minolta Maxxum 5xi (35mm SLR and still planning on using it) and recently acquired a Canon Digital Rebel XTI from my Aunt.

I took up photography as a hobby and am new, still learning the ropes.

After doing much research, I decided to save up for the T5. The T5i looks attractive, but I cannot for the life of me justify the extra $100 or so for the T5i.

Which one should I get?

The T6i is way out of my budget (under $500)..I could save a little more and get the T5i, but for the life of me I cannot justify the $100 price difference between the T5 and the T5i. I keep looking at the two and to someone new to photography, the specs are so similar, granted the T5i is newer.

Also, I am not the one to buy the latest and greatest if I am honest. Just because a camera is 10 or 20 years old (like my 35mm SLR), it does not mean it will take bad pictures.

It looks like you already made up your mind. I would go with your gut feelings. The T5 is certainly a capable camera and does a fine job. The main thing is the sensor and both have the same sensor.

One word though, in anything electronic, which is where cameras belong, you are not the controlling force that obsoletes them. That is largely out of our control. If you read my sig you will notice I still use obsolete, discontinued cameras but they were the top of the line at one point. They are still relevant today and will be for some time.

Good luck with your new T5.

But if you're trying to select a camera for the long haul, I'm inclined to think that picking from a higher line may be a better bet than picking the top of a lower line. I.e., a refurb 7D or 70D (both recently rendered obsolete and therefore susceptible to price softness) may be a better value in the long run than the T5i for someone in the OP's situation.

One has to assume that they made at least some progress between the T2i and the T5, which means it has to outclass the relatively ancient XTi.

I still have my XTi.

One really important question is what lenses do you have? It is a frequently expressed wisdom in photography that glass (lenses) is more important than what camera you have. A very basic or outdated camera can take a very good image with a good lens, but even a great camera cannot take a good image with a poor quality lens.

I am am sure there is a better expression of this sentiment out there, but you get the idea. If your current lenses are lacking, you may be better off keeping the XTI and instead spending your money on a lens. The T5 is not going to be wildly different from an XTI but a good lens will be noticeably better than a bad one.

What do you shoot? Street? Portraits? Landscapes? sports, and if so what ones? Hopefully for your budget not indoor ones.

How have you come up with the choice of T5 or T5i? Both cameras will give you comparable image quality. The T5 has just been replaced by the T6. A refurbished T5 kit is a good idea. But, having good lenses are where the rubber hits the road.
