@TheRogue wrote:

Well, the EOS R has certainly thrown a spanner in the works with my dilema!

If you want a full frame camera, much like what you use now (5DIII), then the new EOS R makes sense.

PROS: makes full use of the lenses you already have (24-70mm, 50/1.2, 70-200/2.8 IS, via adapters), sealed magnesium shell, sensor/image similar to 5DIV (30MP vs 22MP in your current camera), pretty impressive new AF system (5655 AF points cover nearly the entire image area, claimed to be the fastest AF system ever put in a camera), same batteries and charger as you use now, inexpensive SD memory cards. Can use EF-S lenses in crop mode (cannot use EF-M lenses, but you don't have either of these types of lenses). $2299 for an EOS R body seems quite reasonable, considering EOS R specs are much like a 5DIV's (currently $3099 on sale, list price $3499). 4K video capable (I heard it's 1.6X crop, but don't know for certain).

CONS: a lot fewer shots per battery charge (BG-E22 grip avail. to help), not much reduction in size/weight vs what you have especially when using adapted EF lenses, adapter required to use EF/EF-S lenses (though Canon added value by making one adapter with a drop-in filter drawer and another with a programmable control ring that can be used for various functions), single memory card slot.

The APS-C format M5 or M6 or M50 are much smaller and lighter... and can use EF-M lenses which are also small and light. HOWEVER, there are only seven EF-M lenses currently avail. (one more coming soon).... part of the weight savings is because M-series cameras and the lenses are rather "plasticky" (compare to magnesium shell 5D-series and new EOS R). Adapter required to use your EF lenses on these mirrorless too, but there are a bunch of different adapters avail. to allow a variety of vintage lenses to be used on these (there no doubt will eventually be for the RF-mount too... but currently aren't). FInally, the most expensive of these, the M5, is currently selling for $829.

Lots of other differences... both pro and con.

***********

Alan Myers
San Jose, Calif., USA
"Walk softly and carry a big lens."
GEAR: 5DII, 7DII (x2), 7D(x2) some other cameras, various lenses & accessories
FLICKR & ZENFOLIO

Hi Guys. As subject line - I want something for a bit of general photography and maybe video. I'm usually attracted to price - that being that if its more expensive it must be better. But is this right in this case? There's a significant difference in price between the M5 and M6 and yet the M6 is the later product. And what about the M50? So... any thoughts?

Depends on how much an EVF and better lens is worth to you. Only you can answer that.

Primariily because lenses change less often and hold their price (much more than bodies) and bodies change and update very quickly.

If you are looking at the M-series there is a limited range of EF-M lenses, but if you get the EF to EF-M adaptor you can use all of Canon's EF lenses, offering much higher quality and faster glass. That said, there is an ergonomic disadvantage to having a honking great lens on a small, light body.

If you want the M series, I would ask if you intend to do any serious telephoto (particularly stills) work: if that is so I would go with the M-5 or M-50 as they both have built in EVFs - using the EV against your brow to give 3 points of contact and support allows you a much more stable support than holding it with just two hands. The M-5 is a higher-end unit for stills (but only has HD video), but the M-50 seems to have moved (at the cost of some stills features) more to the needs of videographers with 4K and a fully rotating LCD screen (the M-5's LCD has a much more limited range of travel and is virtually impossible to use for selfies on a tripod). DPReview has a fairly good review of both bodies.

You are right of course. The glass is the single most important thing. To be honest I only lean towards the best glass available. I have with all of my DSLR cameras. Getting the best M series lens would be the same, I suspect. Is there like an equivelent to the L series, for the M? I don't mean actual L series via adaptor.

I dont think I would be using my L series lenses on whichever M I get - simply because it would defeat the object of why I considering downsizing, to a point.

Your paragraph on the M series bodies is very useful, so thabk you for that. What you have said will help sway my decision I am sure.

I am sure it will just add to the current choices. In this case, since size and portability is a concern, any new FF mirrorless will probably not affect that decision very much.

I think it has a huge impact on lenses though - where the focal length as stated on M series now, won't then apply to FF. Maybe L series lenses come back into their own again then. And then the subject of downsizing becomes an issue again. Decisions, decisions!

The focal length of a lens is the focal length of a lens, a physical property that has nothing to do with the format.

M series cameras use an APS-C sized sensor, so you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6 to see what the view would be for a FF camera, but that is just a convention.

But the focal ranges (11-16, 17-55, 50-150, ...) that are most convenient on an APS-C camera are not the ones (16-35, 24-70, 70-200, ...) that are most convenient on a full-frame camera.
