Shutter closes when EOS 80 turned on

I'm having an issue with my EOS 80D. When I turn the camera on, the shutter will automatically close and stay in the closed position. My options for correcting this is to either turn the camera off (and the shutter opens back up again) or to remove the lens. Turning the camera off does not work many times because the shutter just closes again when I turn the camera back on. This will also happen occasionally when the camera tries to focus, but happens more often as soon as I turn the camera on. Any thoughts on a fix.

All I am really trying to do is turn it on and use it. Nothing fancy, just take basic pictures. But with the shutter in a constant closed position (I'm not saying stuck because it opens as soon as you turn the camera off or remove the lens - also maybe closed is the wrong term. When looking through the viewfinder, it goes dark (can't see through it) as soon as you turn the camera on) . It is set in the "scene intelligent Auto" mode.

Something's wrong with that description. The shutter stays closed all the time (except when you're actually taking a picture) unless it's in live view mode. And the shutter isn't in the lens, so whether a lens is attached or not shouldn't matter.

How would you know anyway that the shutter "opens back up again" when you turn the camera off? You wouldn't be able to see it, since the mirror would be in the way. As I type this, I start to wonder if you're actually talking about the mirror, not the shutter. If that's the case, I suggest that you begin to renew your acquaintance with the instruction manual.

So when you press the shutter button nothing happens? Try manual mode set the apeture to 5.6 and the shutter speed to 100/sec. iso to 100.

See what happens.

Thanks for the response. My terminology may be incorrect and for that I apologize. The issue is definitely in the body and not the lens. The mirror lock is not enabled, so I don't think that is the issue. I'm trying to attach a video of what is occcurring when I turn the camera on and off. The view is through the viewfinder of the camera. When the camera switch is turned to "on" something blocks the view through the viewfinder. When turned off, you can see through it again. All the while, the camera will not take pictures when this happens and is turned on.

Is it possible that you have the live view button enabled? This would result in the mirron locking up when the camera is turned on and not being able to see through the viewfinder. Still, I would have expected that the LCD would have lit up as soon as the lens cap was removed...

Thanks. God knows when I may have bumped that switch but that appears to have corrected the issue. Thanks for your input. You just saved my Italy trip.

The LCD on my 80D is a rotating out screen. So it does not come on unless I rotate the panel to open it up. This may be why it was not lighting up in live-view mode. Thanks again.

Glad you have a solution that did not cost the earth to resolve. I have a 80D myself and they are a great camera. I hope you have a great trip to Italy and get lots of awesome shots!

Movie mode was enabled.
