Which adapter is being used here?

It's a M42 to EOS adapter. The way the modification done is not scientific.

There is a high risk that the lens rear element will hit the camera mirror assembly. It's not worth it.

Is there a better means of mounting this lens? Maybe with some kind of converter? I'm really determined to have it on this camera body, would there still be a few millimeters of clearance from the mirror if I just use the adapter?

I don't think we have enough information to even consider trying to answer your question. On what camera body are you determined to have it? "This camera body" is rather unspecific.

People adapt vinatge manual focus lenses to use on DSLRs will have different problems. Putting the adapted lens on a full frame or cropped sensor camera body is not the same.

A lot of lenses will clash with the mirror of 5D/5D2/5D3(examples of FF camera) and some will not. If use on cropped sensor bodies, most of them are okay.

Before modification you have to have some knowledge of back focal length、registration distance、flange distance、flange focal distance etc. Even if a lens can be adapted to mount onto a camera, it may not be able to focus to close distance or infinity.

Adapter rings of different manufacturers have different thickness and tolerence. You need to try a few of them to see their adaptability. Modifying the M42 to EOS adapter as shown in the video is not an easy task and even if you have the skill and machine to get it done, you may not be able to align the lens properly to the adapter.

I have modified over 30 vintage lenses but they are not all good. A very basic nifty fifty and EF-s 24 2.8 pancake will certainly be better than most of these adapted lenses

Good luck and have fun. But do not break your camera. ( I scratched some mount rings and jammed some focus pins before. You will get frustrated if you cannot manage to open up the camera to fix these very possible damages)

Sony mirrorless is not M43. (micro four third)

Mathieu Stern used just the front lens adapted to a M42 to M42 helicoid.

Then add a M42 to sony NEX (or whatever mirrorless camera mount type) for camera mounting.

Mirrorless cameras have very short registration distance and thus can adapt a lot of manul focus lenses with specific adapters.

With suitable helicoids, focusing from close to far is possible in most cases.

I doubt they will work on DSLRs.

I am planning on using it on an APS-C XSi. I would need a helicoid if I don't use the original backplate (which I do have but contains small welded on parts which may get in the way of a simple filter. The T43 came off of a Smena Symbol with the shutter button behind the lens itself.) Wouldn't a helicoid increase the distance of the lens from the sensor too far away for it to function - not even considering focusing to infinity..

Even if you use the thinnest helicoid, you may only be able to focus very close to the subject. Thus, limit the use of the modified lens in macro photography.
