Both taken with the same exact lens, same subject, same distance, same settings, etc. 7D is as it came from the camera. 5D is cropped to 1.6x. Both images are then resized to the same size. (Unfortunately downwards, as there were a file size limit for uploading picture here.) If you'll notice I even wrote the resulting pixels sizes during the steps.

However, when you crop the 5D image to 1.6x, the pixel dimensions are much smaller than that of 7D, although both images cover the same area.

Perhaps I should have resized the images according to per centage instead of both to the same size.

Here is a comparison between a 7D and a 5D3.

Subject was the same distnace from the camera and shot with the same 100/2.8 L Macro lens.

Resulting images have been enlarged (to roughly the same size, using LR zoom slider) to show the real difference in resolution more clearly. 5D3 on the left, 7D on the right.

As you can see, the 7D resolves more detail from the same projected image. This is reach - and the 18MP crops are still the highest resolving DSLR's in the Canon lineup. And this is part of the reason why the 7D is so valued by birders.

(BTW - make sure you view this image at it's full size to see the difference properly. Right-click and select Open Image in New Tab)

7D is a great Camera for sure...BUT...the 5D Mark II is better in regards to Sensor and quality by far. I can tell that the metering of the 7D is better in regards to the overall scene. I used the 7D for more sporty events, wildlife, quickmoving subjects, and the 5D MK II for landscapes, candids, ports, etc... When you buy the 5D2 you will also be acquiring better lenses that work with full frame... I'm rolling with the 5D Mark III now and the 7D, the 7D still gets its use but it has full frame lenses on it. I prefer to go long range using the 7D as opposed to an extender on my soon to be bought 100-400 and 70-200 f2.8..I would chose the quality that the 5D2 puts out over the 7D for many uses.. Hope that helps..

I have the 7D and Mklll. 7D gets plenty of use doing sports and other fast moving subjects. The extra reach of the 70-200mm on the 7D is very nice. The Mklll just can't quite get in there. Video on the Mkll (and Mklll) is better than the 7D. The larger sensor (and photo sites) give less noise and more apparent DR than the 7D.

The huge sensor on the 5Ds and the subsequent larger 6.4um cells on it gather light way better than any crop sensor. I don't own a flash, don't need it because I can shoot at ISO3200 and f1.2, and the low light image quality is enormously good. It's also superb for long expsoures doing landscape work, etc. HOWEVER, none of that seems to fit your shooting plans. 70% sports means you'll be mostly in good light and need as much reach as possible, good AF and fast FPS. The AF on the 7D is fantastic (and is finally on the 5D3 praise the Lord), so to me it seems start with the 7D and get great AF and longer reach and faster FPS.

24-105mm: this is the kit lens for the 5D 2 and 3, but it costs over $1000 on it's own. People pay $800-850 for them, and often you can get the 5D2 kit for only $500 or $600 more. SO, you buy the kit, sell the 24-105, and your 5D2/3 costs $200 less from the profit you made. There you go!

Definitely consider the 50mm 1.8, about $100 right now. It'll give you a great 80mm fast lens for people shots and walkaround images especially when the sun starts going down. It's cheap plastic, I can;t use it when shooting weddings, it'd fall apart, but the glass is GREAT and if you are careful with it, you'll fall in love with that lens. Candid people shots outdoors at f1.8 look amazing. Enjoy!

I'm not sure anyone has explained "lens cropping" to you. I hope you understand that the sensor size is the most important factor to consider when buying a DSLR. It can be explained simply as the magnification of the lens that occurs as a result of a reduced sensor size relative to 35mm film. The 5D, 5Dmkii and 5Dmkiii have a sensor exactly the same size as 35mm film. Thus the term 'full-size sensor". The 7D and other DSLR's have a smaller sensor that causes it to only utilize a smaller area in your lens, thus the "cropping". This works out to ba a mathematical formula that gives the effect of multiplying tha focal length of your lenses. 1.7x, 1.6x or 1.3x and so on. Therefore a 50mm EF lens on a 5D will appear wider than the same lens on a 7D. Thus the 7D gives you longer lenses relative to the 5D.

If you want wider lenses, you want a 5Dxxxx. If you want longer lenses you want a 7D.

Also EFs lenses are considered "cropping lenses" and have smaller areas making them cheaper than standard EF lenses. EFs lenses can only be used with a smaller sensor camera (not fullframe like the 5Dxxxx) EF lenses can be used with any of Canon's DSLR cameras but are more expensive because of the larger glass area requred by the fullframe cameras.

I hope this helps.

My Canon 24-70 mm and 70-200mm also have constant f2.8 apertures and they are great for night or indoor sports. They seem to focus faster than my other Canon zoom lenses. I can shoot basketball games in our high school gym at 1/500 of a second at f2.8 at ISO 6400. Using Photoshop, the pictures were are with minimally discernible noise.

For general shooting (such as on a trip) I take my 17-85mm and my 70-300mm, both of which have variable maximum apertures from f.4.5 to f5.6, They are substantially lighter that the two f2.8 lenses and probably a little bit sharper. I want two more Canon lenses in the near future: the 10-22mm and the 100-400mm. The latter for daytime sports, the former for general use in tight quarters and for scenic photography.

For stage photography is use fixed focal length Canon 1.8 lenses: a 28mm, a 50mm and a 85mm. No flash is needed.

I use my lenses on a pair of Canon 7Ds, which were my recent upgrades from a pair of Canon Rebels. I simply could not afford the top of the time Canon cameras but after doing a lot of research I decided that the Canon 7D was the best value out there for the price. The new focusing system, the higher ISO with built in noise reductions, the faster frames per second, and the ability to select a particular color temperature for the lighting conditions were all were features I wanted in my camera upgrade.

There is a point to this: The Canon 7D is a fantastic but reasonably priced piece of equipment. I recommend it without reservation.

Lorin Browning

Landrum Sports

Both are great cameras. I have a 7D and 5D Mk III, but never had a 5D Mk II. Lots of great comments already so to keep it simple:

7D

- High FPS

- Excellent AF system

- Need that extra reach (multiple focal length by 1.6 to get FF equivalent focal length)

- Sports, action

- Pop up flash acts as a master control for the older flash system (580, 430 series)

- takes all EF and EF-S lens

5D Mk II

- FF sensor

- Excellent high ISO

- Ideal for wide angle shooting over crop bodies

- Excellent for portrait, landscape, wedding, events, etc

- takes only EF lens

Why are there a lot of 7Ds for sell? I suppose for a lot of reasons. 7D Mk II is rumored to be available soon, some shooters switching to FF bodies such as 5Ds and 6Ds, and some probably due to the age of their 7Ds Bodies are getting up there in shutter counts. Bodies are not an investment, where lens can be.

They are not comparable. They compliment each other. The ideal is to have both. I know from experience since I have both and love both. They each have their strong points. But the bottom line is the 7D is more advanced than the 5D Mk II.

If you shoot 70% sports, you probably want the 7D. It has a great autofocus system, and a high frames-per-second shooting speed. In sports the 7D's crop sensor also gives you a free 1.6x multiplied telephoto "reach". Getting more reach with lenses is VERY expensive, especially if you are not willing to accept bad image quality from a cheapo telephoto, so that free telephoto effect is priceless.

The 7D2 might be announced sometime in the next few months, but then you won't see one for probably 6 months after the announcement. And when they first come out, the price will be very high for 6 months or more before discounts appear. So I wold not think of it as being right around the corner or anything.

Also, I would not expect miracles from the new 7D. In terms of low light/high ISO performance; maybe 1/2 a stop gain at most, because I think Canon has kind of maxed out for the moment in crop-sensor advances. Until they come out with some revolutionary big new tech like a smaller-nanometer fabrication, or a backlit sensor, or a non-bayer array, or some big game-changer, I think that they are up against their limits on new crop sensors. I am just not sure what gain the 7D2 might have because the original is already so good for sports. 12 fps vs. 10 is no big deal. It is already weather-sealed magnesium, so not much upside potential in construction quality. A new Digic processor could be of some benefit, A jump in megapixels from 18 to 21 or 22 is not that big a deal, and that might actually HURT its low light/high ISO performance.

In any event, I would definitely not reccomend 5D2 if you shoot sports that heavily. I assume by "sports" we are talking about something fast and far-away, right? Not chess or arm-wrestling, right?

I own and use both the 7D and 5DMIII. Feel free to ask me anything that may help you in your decision. There are many good comments in this thread on both bodies (and the 5DMII). I just thought I would make myself available if there were any specific items you wanted to address.

Well all bets are off, if the choice is between the 7D and the 5D Mk III. If you can afford the price of admission, go for the 5D Mk III.

Send me your email address and I will send you some photo's I have recently taken with the "L" amazingly sharp!

I had the 70-300 is usm but was disappointed in the 4.5 f-stop and to be honest the pic's were not as sharp as I thought they should be. I buy all my photo equip. Used on Craigslist. I shopped this lens for about a month and found a guy willing to come down to $1100.00 yes, a lot of money now tied up in the glass but this lens id by far my favorite. A sediment shared by many!

@cdn-bigfoot wrote:

Therefore a 50mm EF lens on a 5D will appear wider than the same lens on a 7D. Thus the 7D gives you longer lenses relative to the 5D.

Key word being "appear". Crop factor is a bit tricky subject. Yes, it appears to give 1.6x more zoom, but it is when you take a full frame photo and crop frame photo and blow them up the same size, the crop frame is enlarged more. You could, in theory, reach the same result with Full Frame and cropping it afterwards with DPP.

Has anyone made a test taking two photos, one with 7D and one with 5D Mark III and cropped the 5D3 photo to 1.6x crop factor? Is the quality the same or is one better? What about the size?

I took two pictures. Both using EF 100mm L macro. First one is 5D Mark II and Speedlite 270EX, cropped to 1.6x. The second is 7D with internal flash, uncropped. Automatic settings on both.

Resulting files were 3510x2340 pixels (from 5616x3744px) and 5184x3456 pixels, respectively.

Had to resize both to 1500x1000 pixels for posting here, so 7D image is actually a bit larger after cropping the 5D2 image.

5D Mark II, cropped to 1.6x

7D, uncropped
